Taking Suggestions!
Ok geek friends, I need some suggestions about Mar’Kessa’s future.
As you may know, we have two scouts in our party. Hakim is a full Scout - level 5. Mar’Kessa is 2 Drow / 3 Scout. Both of us currently have Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot as feats.
I’m pondering not going the typical ranged fighter feats (Rapid/Many shot)… but wondering what other crazy things Mar’Kessa could learn to do. Keep in mind, she is NOT fond of melee. She’s come too close to death and prefers to stay out of the main battle if possible.
What else can she do as far as feats? Give me some thoughts, please!

Hmm… well, since you’re a Scout I assume you have access to Complete Adventurer.
Unfortunately, there really aren’t a lot of great ranged attack feats outside of the PHB, but let’s see…
Good for Scout:
- grabbing Dodge, Mobility, and then Shot on the Run is always a nice option
- Improved Initiative, possibly followed by Danger Sense (1/day reroll initiative, Complete Adventurer)
If you have access to Complete Warrior:
- Improved Toughness (need to be Rogue 6 first, so maybe later)
- Ranged Disarm, Ranged Pin, Ranged Sunder (all fun!)
- Sharpshooting (halves opponent’s cover bonus)
If you have access, there are some nice ranged feats in the PHB2. Deadeye Shot, Penetrating Shot, though both are for higher levels anyways.
- Telling Blow (PHB2, gain Skirmish damage when you crit) is fun
Wow, thanks for the great list! My DM has a stack o’books, so I’ve been thumbing through them here and there as well as combing the internet for ideas.
I do think Ranged Disarm sounds like lots of fun, and very much Mar’Kessa’s style. I can see her using it and then sitting back while Name hacks the unarmed creature into bits.
No problem.
Just make sure, before taking the Ranged Disarm/Pin/Sunder feats, that your GM is comfortable with running those maneuvers.
Some know them by heart, some don’t. Most are willing to allow them as long as you know the mechanics well (so you at least don’t need to go to the books every time).
I’ll MAKE him familiar!
By the way, Ranged Disarm/Pin/Sunder all require your Base Attack Bonus to be +5 first. They would work nicely for your 9th-level feat, though.
Yep, I have a little while to go before I get there.
Get Complete Scoundrel. Go Ranger. Take the feat Swift Hunter from Complete Scoundrel. Work toward Improved Skirmish and Greater Manyshot (or is it Improved Manyshot?). Pick favored enemies who are not subject to critical hits.
Since Graham is already here… I might as well join the discussion (if a bit late)
If you have access to the Tome of Battle, The Swordsage is a great class to combine with the Scout. It’s swift, it’s got cool maneuvers that make moving around really fun.
Of course that would entail asking the Dm for a feat re-spec as the Swordsage is definitively a melee focused class.
How about dipping into some spell-casting and going the Arcane Archer route? It`s a prestige class in the DMG and gives you some nice benefits. It requires you to be an elf, but any DM worth his salt would allow Drow, being a sub-race and all. Also requires a BAB of +6, but gives you some pretty neat arrow effects.
This is Geek’s Dream Girl GM. =)
I bit of a back story about the group…
There are two Scouts, a Halfling and our beloved Mar’Kessa. The halfling has not Lv adjustment so he is already a bad ass Scout, he is also taking your standard Point Blank/Precise shoot/dodge/Mobility/Shoot on the run.
Mar’Kessa has a Lv Adjustment of two, has taken already Point blank and Precise shoot but wishes to go a different way then the halfing.
I am totally for her taking stuff like Range disarm/sunder, the problem with that is that she sucks at Rolling.=P She has a level adjustment of 2 that wont allow her to keep up with the rest of the group as far as base attack gos. Is totally with in character for her to remain a scout and take the Feats such as Range disarm/sunder. Range Pin however is a different story, grappling is complicated and slow enough without adding raged weapons in to it, I have to say NO to Ranged Pin.
The Arcane Archer is something she has already been looking at for quite a wale. I will support her if she gos that route and is not totally out of character for a Drow to take a Lv of Wizard or two but…The Arcane archer is at his/her best by taking strait Wiz/Sor, with a Splash of Barbarian/Fighter/Ranger to help speed up the BAB requirement, THEN going Arcane Archer as you can only Imbued arrows with spells she already knows. The Seeker Arrow is great but thats 4levelsin to the class. She is a Scout so she has the BAB of a Rouge and taking Wiz/Sor(or any Arcane casting class) would slow her proses even more. I think she benefits more from remaining a Scout and taking trick shoots, Multiclassing with Ranger or going Assassin or other sneaky type prestige class.
GM note on Combat maneuvers: The Book of Nine Swords has tons of them, unfortunately I am not allowing them in my game. I have not gamed/GM in over two years and am a bit rusty so I do not feel comfortable adding new rules (or want to learn hole new sets of rules) like the combat maneuvers. The Range Disarm/Sunder is a different story as there are new variations on already established rules.
P.s.
Gratzz on your shiny new web site!!! =)
I do not roll THAT poorly! The new dice are training the old dice how to behave.
OR it could be that your new dice are corrupting the new ones. >-)
So today’s session, I totally sucked! Miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, hit for 3, miss, miss, miss. What does everyone think about me multi-classing with fighter so I can just take a metric buttload of feats? At least when I do hit, I’d have a chance of doing some damage.
Currently, Mar’Kessa is 2 Drow / 3 Scout. We just leveled, so I have a level to spend. Stay in Scout, or add 1 Fighter?
You be the judge!
The Halfling almost as useless as you.=)
He hit but is was always for 4-6Dmg. Taking Fighter will only help you hit but it would help you do more Dmg, the Scout class is great but like the Rouge is cant do mush against things that are immune to Crits/sneak att/Skirmish. Don’t get frustrated, the Gnoll is in the same shoes as you, he starts out with a runt of a Gnoll for the base and he just recently got his first Level in Druid.
If you take Fighter were dos that leave the group for disabling Traps?
I know it’s from a while ago, and this is asking for feats, but this just came to mind:
Technically, Drow are Elves. You could end up taking Arcane Archer if you took levels in a spellcasting class, which is pretty good for a ranged fighter (remember, Point Blank Shot applies to ranged spells too).

O, or I could have read the comments about that above me…
