while my engagement didn't have a "geek" flair, my wedding sure did, My wife and I got maried at the renaissance festival here in Michigan. There is nothing more romantic then saying "I do" with swords and plate clashing together in the jousting event going on in the back ground :) Not to mention, later one of my inlaws had my "arrested" and put in town jail, where I had to sing and dance my way out, took forever, as I can not do either very well, and least not sober :)

I didn't take the geek approach in my proposal. About the only geek activity I ever got my wife to participate in where a few MTG games when we first started dating. That dwindled away as I got involved in competitive tournaments. It might have been a neat idea to create a "Marry Me?" MTG card, ask her to play and "draw" it from my deck to show her (putting it in her deck might not guarantee it got played).

The actual proposal was classic romance. I had written a poem for my-then-girlfriend as an anniversary present. The poem was a 3 verse summary of how we met and our time as a long-distance couple (she moved a couple hours away to finish school a month after we started dating). I had a planned fourth verse that would be the proposal.

We took a trip a couple months later to the Ashland Shakespeare festival. I bought the ring ahead of time and decided to propose to her before the play in a park that was near the outdoor theater. I had her sit on a bench while I got down on my knee, read the poem with the fourth verse and presented the ring.

As a funny aside, she almost ruined the surprise when we first arrived at the park. I had tossed my jacket--with the ring box in the pocket--in the backseat of the car. She grabbed it for me as we got out, and felt the box. She would not stop asking me what was in my jacket as we walked down to the park. She even tried to make a grab for the box a couple times.

I proposed to my wife when we came out of a screening of Empire Strikes Back a bit before Phantom Menace came out.

I stopped at a jewelry store with her and I asked her if she'd like a gold ring into which you could put different colored inserts in it.

When I bought it and gave it to her, I asked her to marry me, on the spot.

I had heard about the Neil Gaiman one, and it struck me as totally awesome that he would help out like that. A marriage proposal is something that should definitely have a lot of meaning and bring a smile every time it is remembered. I'm sad to see the stuff on my cat idea taken, well I guess I can scratch that one off the list of potential ideas. :)
