Personal Ad Makeover: Austin (DURING)

Construction! So, we got a very small idea of what Austin is all about, and frankly, it just leaves me with lots of questions.

I’m going to ask them.

Austin has a choice.  He can either out himself and reply in the comments or he can email me the answers.

If you, my dear readers, have any questions you’d like to ask Austin, feel free to add them in the comments below.

About me and who I’m looking for

I’m an intellect with a kind heart; a giver not a taker.

Give me some examples here.   Do you volunteer at the homeless shelter?  Tip well at Starbucks?

I look more for sincere friendships over causal acquaintances.

Show, don’t tell.  How long have you been friends with your oldest friend?  Is your circle of friends very small and tight-knit?  What kind of people are you friends with?

People say I have a “fantastic” sense of humor.

“Fantastic” can go so many directions.    Sarcastic funny, dry funny, dirty funny, pop culture quotation funny, punny funny?

Not a drama fan but not afraid of challenges or to express passion.

Ah, what have I said about drama? NO DRAMA!  Not unless you’re a theater major.  What kind of challenges have you faced recently and overcome?  What are you passionate about and how do you show it?

I’m a cat person but like most animals.

Which is why, of course, your main picture is with a dog.  I found that very amusing.  This is a nice factoid, but a very weak ending for your main section.

for fun:

Movies, friends, dinner, coffee (preferably tea)

Ah, the laundry list.  Avoid these at all costs, folks.  It’s better to have one well-crafted sentence about one activity you enjoy.  Perhaps list your favorite tea house and your favorite tea you sip there.

my job:

I’m a student at — and do draft work for a construction company on the side.

Not bad.  Not exciting, but then again, it’s drafting.  (I kid, I kid.  My daddy is a draftsman.)

my ethnicity:

I’m kind of a mutt. My name is Irish but my genes range from English to Native American to Latin.

This just needs a bit of rewording, but the info is good.

my religion:

My faith is a big part of my life. I was raised non-denomination Christian and feel comfortable in almost any Christian church.

Also good, and important to mention if it’s important to you.  For those geeks out there for whom religion is not so important, feel free to leave this section blank.  As Thumper’s mom once said, “If you don’t have somethin’ nice to say, don’t say nuthin’ at all.

my education:

Current — student. Spend one year at — before transferring out.

There’s a better way to word this that makes it seem a little less rude to college #1.  After all, your dream girl might attend that school and you wouldn’t want her offended!

Hi e! Hi everyone! I honestly didn’t think I would be chosen for this honor by our mistress of words, e. My profile is so… eh (shrug). I don’t even find it appealing. As you have pointed out, e, my words are few; so I will “out myself” and give you fine readers a more detailed glimpse into my persona.

I’m an intellect with a kind heart; a giver not a taker.

Give me some examples here. Do you volunteer at the homeless shelter? Tip well at Starbucks?

I have volunteered at homeless shelter, thought it has been some years since I made it a regular habit. What I meant by this comment was that I’m not a selfish person. There are three kinds of people in this world; the givers, the takers, and those on the fence. The takers go out of their way to get ahead and are not afraid to think of themselves first. The givers take pains to ensure others needs are met before their own. I’m not talking about a life of charity ala Mother Teresa. It’s more about intent than the deeds themselves. Do you stay the extra 5 seconds to hold open the door for the people behind you or are you to busy thinking about yourself/what’s next/ what just happened/ anything BUT the people behind you?

I look more for sincere friendships over causal acquaintances.

Show, don’t tell. How long have you been friends with your oldest friend? Is your circle of friends very small and tight-knit? What kind of people are you friends with?

In my first year of college I knew the entire freshman class. I went to a small Nazarene University in my area for its academics. It wasn’t until I moved into the dorm did I realize ones social life is an equally important aspect of one’s college years. Because of the size of the school it wasn’t long before I knew everyone by a first name basis, be it the guys down to hall to the cooks in the cafeteria. Despite this I only had one “friend”. I knew and hung out with plenty of people but there was only one person I trusted to care for and I knew I would care for. Her wedding was just last weekend and I couldn’t be happier for her. I know we will be friends for the rest of our lives. I have few friends, but good ones.

People say I have a “fantastic” sense of humor.

“Fantastic” can go so many directions. Sarcastic funny, dry funny, dirty funny, pop culture quotation funny, punny funny?

I don’t think I’m funny, hence the quotes. I know some dirty jokes, but I would say them to just anyone. I can be sarcastic but it’s not a defining personality trait. I have thrown out some horrible puns but only when the mood strikes me. My humor is contextual. I’m the type of funny that is appropriate for the time, place and people. The jokes I tell in the privacy of my own head aren’t really all that good…

Not a drama fan but not afraid of challenges or to express passion.

Ah, what have I said about drama? NO DRAMA! Not unless you’re a theater major. What kind of challenges have you faced recently and overcome? What are you passionate about and how do you show it?

Don’t get me started on theater majors, I always have one-too-many in my life. Honestly, the biggest challenge in recent memory has been a battle with myself. I’ve been struggling with depression for the past year and a half, got within an inch of suicide this past January. Dark times. I’ve been seeing some good help and I think I’ve finally sorted out my meds but it feels like a distant thunder cloud in the back of my mind that could come rain on my parade at any time.

My passion is very personal. I’ve been told that people who think that little extra are more in tune with their emotions. More time to think about them, I suppose. I’ve always been more in touch with feels than most other guys. I’ve also been able to hone mastery over them. I’m never angry in public and I know when it’s ok to cry. I hope my prospective match-y can discover these emotion in ways no one ever has.

I’m a cat person but like most animals.

Which is why, of course, your main picture is with a dog. I found that very amusing. This is a nice factoid, but a very weak ending for your main section.

The dog pic wasn’t my idea. Just say’n.

Ah, the laundry list. Avoid these at all costs, folks. It’s better to have one well-crafted sentence about one activity you enjoy. Perhaps list your favorite tea house and your favorite tea you sip there.

Green tea, hands down. There are a bazillion coffee places in Boise but no tea places, I think that’s a British thing. I’m a huge film buff; most of my first dates include movies simply because I want an excuse to enjoy a good film. Unfortunately, once I’m into a movie it’s a solo experience, so not too much fun for my dates. Got to work on that, ya.

    my job:
I’m a student at — and do draft work for a construction company on the side.

Not bad. Not exciting, but then again, it’s drafting. (I kid, I kid. My daddy is a draftsman.)

Actually it’s my dad’s company I draft for. I can do the job, so it’s not like I’m daddies little boy but I still feel some resentment from the other workers from time to time. Working for family has it’s perks, but it also can suck at times. When I have a bad day at the office, work fallows me home.

    my ethnicity:
I’m kind of a mutt. My name is Irish but my genes range from English to Native American to Latin.

This just needs a bit of rewording, but the info is good.

English has never been my strong suit. I almost failed my intro to script writing class when I was
studying movies. Before you ask, I have no idea what my major is now so…

    my religion:
My faith is a big part of my life. I was raised non-denomination Christian and feel comfortable in almost any Christian church.

I’d like to say more here but I don’t know what to write.

Personally I don’t really like college #1. I’m only here because it’s cheaper.

Ya, that the was the beginning of another sentence that was cut out. I’ve completely forgotten what was written there.

    Travel: Alaska, Hawaii, the coast.

What’s your favorite memory of your trip to Alaska and/or Hawaii?

The thing about Alaska is the long summer days. It’s really a trip unless you experience it for yourself. Your internal clocks all like “Dude, I’m good to go for a few more hours!” but your brains all like “No way! It’s fricken midnight and the sun still up! WTF!” That and Denali National Park. When I dream of paradise, sometimes it looks like Denali on a cloudy day.

    Good? Bad? Ugly?

For anyone who hasn’t read any of Terry Pratchett’s “Disk World” books I highly recommend them. There are well over thirty books in the series with a wide range of stories and characters. He uses a stereotypical high-fantasy, D&D-esk world to satire modern day ideas on topics spanning from police officers to war and religion. The fact that the funniest character is DEATH should give you an idea on how absurd these books are. Go to your local library and check one out, NOW! (I recommend starting with “Night Watch”. It picks up in the middle of the Watch story arc but it is by far the best written book of Prachett’s.) And there you have it. Please ask any other questions you might have. I’d love to answer them. (I’ve already been pretty candid so I don’t have much to lose. ;p )
