Character Sneak Peek & Sitting On the Fence…

I am very indecisive. I can see all sides of all things and sometimes it makes it very difficult to make decisions. Most of the time, I bug my boyfriend or Graham of CriticalAnkleBites.com for advice. (Usually Graham because for some reason the boy is online 24/7.)  I’ve been known to bug other bloggers and my gaming group buddies.

But today, I’m going to bug you, readers.

You see, on Wednesdays we’re starting a new campaign…

I’m a half-elf wizard named Joelle Al’Maera.   My husband, Andric Al’Maera is a human warlord.  (You may also know him as Hybban, the DM of Mielka’s adventures.)

Sneak preview:  We’re going to do a “He Said / She Said” style campaign log, so you’ll get to see the action from both angles.   I’m thinking it’ll be pretty fun.  Battle of the Sexes, maybe?  We’ll see how it goes.

Here’s a snippet of what Joelle looks like at the moment:

Stats:

  • STR - 10
  • CON - 15
  • DEX - 11
  • INT - 16
  • WIS - 14
  • CHA - 14

Trained in:

  • Arcana
  • Diplomacy
  • Insight
  • Nature

Feat:

  • Linguist

Powers:

  • At-Will:  Cloud of Daggers, Thunderwave
  • Encounter:  Icy Terrain
  • Daily:  Sleep

I need to pick an At-Will power from another class because I’m Half-Elf and all, but I can’t figure out what I want.   If it helps, here’s our party line-up:

  • Wizard
  • Warlord
  • Warlock
  • Ranger
  • Swordmage

(Yes, we’re aware we’re kinda without a healer.  We’re crazy like that.)

So… any thoughts on my cross-class At-Will power?

  1. I say take the Warlock’s Eyebite ability so when someone is up in your business you can use Eyebite to potentially disappear.

  2. Without a healer?…the warlord’s class feature is Inspiring Word! (usable twice per encounter, let’s you or an ally use a healing surge +1d6 hit points)…not to mention half of its utility powers are packed with healy goodness…looks like a solid group from here…

Much better off than the wizard, 2 bow rangers, and rogue who always throws his daggers I run a game for back home…those guys need a paladin BAD…

  3. @ Mike - well, yeah… he’s sort of a healer. Enough. ;) But he’s my in-game husband and I’m not very confident of his abilities to keep us alive. ;)

  4. Eyebite is definitely useful for wizards or really all half-elfs. If you’re really concerned about healing, grab Sacred Flame. Not actual healing, but some temp HP is good in a jam.

Also e, maybe I’ve been misunderstanding, but I believe wizards choose 2 dailies, and prepare a different one each day. Flaming Sphere is full of awesome and win.

  5. I had my 4E expiriance and I have been staying away from it since. Not saying that I wont play it, if my group want to start a 4E campaign Ill play it but I prefer 3.5…

So as mush as id like to help you, I am unfortunately unable offer any worth wale information…I just want to say, Half-Elfs ROCK in 4E. =)

  6. I’d at least consider Sword Burst (swordmage). You won’t get to use it every fight (in fact, you will hope you don’t have to), but its a good power to pop some minions just in case your defenders are out-maneuvered and you find yourself in the thick of things.

Of course, this is assuming that the power hasn’t changed since the RPGA preview… I don’t have access to the FRPG yet.

  7. You may want to consider what stat, other than intelligence, you are planning to raise as you gain levels, that way your power stays useful to you as you gain levels. If it’s Charisma then Eyebite is good. Looking at your stats I’m guessing Con, and your are going for a controller Wizard, in which case I would think about Eldritch Blast maybe, tossing out more damage is always nice. If it’s DEX than maybe the Rogue’s Sly Flourish, you have a decent Charisma so that helps and you can use it from range, which is good being a wizard and all.
I haven’t seen the Swordmage, so no idea what stats it’s powers are based on, so can’t help there.

  8. If you really want to make this a true couple experience, you should take the Warlord at-will power Commander’s Strike. “With a shout, you command an ally to attack.” Though I think you need to be in melee range of your ally to do this, it would let you boss him or any other party member around. Plus if they hit with their basic melee attack, they get to add your Int modifier to the damage roll.

  9. Wow, so many options… hmmmm… I really do need to think about what stat I want to improve as time goes on…

  10. I recommended a few in our chat, but I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that you also think about what your character is like. I picked Eyebite for my character because it seemed like a cool thing for him to do and appropriate to the character (and also worked with his Cha.)

  11. As someone else already said, as a Wizard you get to put two Daily powers in your spellbook. Then you pick which you want to memorize each time you rest. When you hit second level you also put 2 Utility powers in your spellbook. The Wizard feat Expanded Spellbook allows you to put a third daily from each level into your book.

Which implement do you plan to go with?

The cleric powers look interesting given your Wis score:
Lance of Faith or Sacred Flame.

Dire Radiance from the Warlock could be handy also.

  12. I have to decide before tomorrow! Eek! :)

@ Milambus - My Monday group people would probably kill me if I took Lance of Faith for Wednesday. (There’s significant overlap between the two games.) Lance of Faith is Mielka’s signature move (which I almost always miss… boooo!).

  13. Up your Dex and go for Twin Strike (with a longbow) then =)

    Call it your elven heritage.

  14. I still say Eyebite, even if you aren’t going to max out Charisma. It makes you invisible if an enemy gets to close so that you can run and then blast him with a spell, helpful for non-melee combatants like yourself.

Also, due to this I realized, apparently Firefox 3.0’s spellchecker had melee added to it. I was always so confused and thought I spelled it wrong before. Yay

  15. Okay everybody… I think I’ve narrowed it down to either Commander’s Strike (from my warlord hubby) or Eyebite (because it would be nice to disappear every so often!). :) I’ll keep ya posted!

  16. Don’t forget to mention that your hubby is warlord… Multiclassed in Wizard!
