Monks are even more so pure attack opposed to defense.

A monk is alot easier for a bard to kill than:rangers.

A skilled ranger can put alot of stress on a bard, especially since his long range can hurt and he has some really great utilities.

Root and snare are the bane of a bards existance, but mezz and lul can be deadly to a ranger who is caught off guard.

The bard class remind me more of a well gearered mix of:Enchanter/shaman/druid.

Why? because of our capabilities.

i mean who wants to be opposed to the side of a bard helping out someone? can you imagine how deadly it would be if you had a bard siding with monsters?

100% haste+ac+attack+heal+mezz+mana drain etc etc=death.

I have played a bard for 7 years and eventually quit everquest alltogether.

I loved my bard, but in the end there wasn't enough people to actually do anything and for reason soe nerfed our solo capabilities.

I mean sure we had some SW33T MAGIC!!!

Man those buffs were nice.

problem is that during late game with the lack of actuall groups, all you could do is solo.

Also bards deserve to get credit for the amount of stress they deal with daily.

HEY NOOB!! CAN'T YOU PULL? BARD:IF YOUR SO DAMM GOOD YOU DO IT!! i'm outta here.

Yes this has happened to me,i consider myself knowleagable about the bard class.

Another thing,i found pvp to be a bit broken during the end with bard.

I mean:SHadow knights and paladins are practically invincible.

They have Magic resist so high, that our spells cannot penetrate their defenses, and in direct contact we are dead meat because they wield very powerfull weapons, with an exception that we are faster than them and can outrun them so long as they don't snare us.

Thing about bards in pvp is,they have alot of defensive power spells and i mean ALOT!! we can survive hits sure,we have armor for some weird reason, but i find that we are mostly defense and not as much offense.

Rangers are opposite to bards, they are mostly offense and have less defense, they do have defensive capabilities but not as many as bards.

Also their ac is alot lower cause they are leather class.

This is the first version of the Bard since AD&D that I've been interested in playing. I have to hand it to the crew at WOTC, I didn't think they would get me to invest in the PHB2 but they might have just clinched it with this preview (unlike adventurers vault). Let's hope they keep the gaming goodness flowing.

They had better bring the druid back as well, but then again, I agreed with the reason for exclusion they mentioned in "Classes & Races" - I think that is the title. Didn't buy it, just check it out at B&N once in a while...

I would like to have seen the bard as a paragon tier for the rogue. That's a bit of how the original bard was. You had to multi-class fighter, thief, and druid (5-7/3-5/3-5 levels, IIRC). Then you got to be a bard, after getting all that multi-class experience you get to sing about.

Again, not knocking WotC, but I think they needed a way to make PHB2 more of a must-have...

@Oz

From what I have read of all three, the WotC version does a better job of catching the flavour of the Bard than the other two. It's also the first of the three that makes me excited about playing a 4e version of a Bard.

The at-will powers alone have me going "WantwantwantwantwantWANT!!!!"

This ability to dabble in other classes seems a lot along the line of what I was thinking for a 4e Bard. I've been able to get away without an actual Bard class in my current campaign just because neither of my players in that game are running one, and I can fake it close enough for the odd occasion a recurring NPC that is supposed to be a bard is around for a fight.

I'm also curious how the official 4e Bard compares to the Forgotten Heroes and Advanced Player's Guide versions.

My last 3.5 character was a Bard, and I think it was the first time ANY of my friends had ever played or played with a Bard who was actually effective at a lot of things. I had a blast playing it, and can't wait to try one out in 4e!
