My experiences with online dating sites so far have provided OKC to be the best of the bunch, but they all need work. Match never worked for me. I suspect that has to do with how specific I am about my tastes. I'm a complicated person in general. eHarmony hasn't done me much good at all. OKC has been useful for the fact that it allows me to define my own criteria for searching and matching. It could use some greater flexibility (like boolean functions in search and more advanced question scoring options), but overall provides a pretty good series of methods for narrowing down the field.

On the other hand, OKC also is prone to error because of lack of standardization. I met someone on eHarmony whom I had previously seen on OKC and dismissed because of our difference in match %.

More important than match percents and the like, though, is the detail of profiles. I've found that people will join pay sites and still not be serious about their search. It's the level of detail and insight into themselves that best predicts their seriousness and level of commitment. On eHarmony, that means I've only contacted 60 people out of hundreds, and only about 120 on OKC. Out of those 120 on OKC, the personal details and the depth of information are what helped me make up my mind. For me, it's better to have detail and a person who doesn't reply often, because those are usually the intelligent, serious women that I'm looking for.

Now if only I could get more search and match customization power into my hands...

I love the idea of a reply to first email ratio! THAT IS GENIUS!

I think that to find a match, you will have to make use of every resource possible: in fishing terms cast the biggest, broadest net possible.

What the big deal about PoF's interface? It works just fine for what it does, is not loaded with flash, and the ads are not obtrusive.

I am assuming that the big two free ones are OKCupid and PoF?

“Real Geeks Don’t Pay For Online Dating” FInally, something other than "You get what you pay for" !!!

Lot of interesting ideas there. I really like the fact that they have some kind of vision there even if it doesn't really work for some (many, most?) people. The whole dating as a gang activity.

On the other hand that is how kids date -- the whole hanging out with your mates and two groups (M/F) and venturing across the dance floor and stuff from teen years.

A lot of people using dating sites are the older ones who either did that and it didn't work for them, or they can't do it. So now they want to shop for a date like the shop for a washing machine. Online, with specifications, and "click here to compare these models".

Anyway obviously I need to look closer at the site with their ideas in mind.

Sam seems to be a bright guy, but ignores the basic issue of a free site: with no investment in the process, there is no real indication that the people you're corresponding with are taking things seriously.

Also,
I know it may seem insane, but I'd like to know if the woman I'm interested in has it "together" enough to be able to swing the $30.

I think the moral of the story, Boys and Girls, is that depending on you, the kind of person you want to meet, and your location on the planet... different sites work better for different people.

There isn't a right or a wrong side of the issue.

Can't we all just get along? ;)

@messerole

On OKC, there is a link somewhere in the drop down menus to "Fun Stuff". This includes two experiments where folks involved in the site 1) Pay two people to get fat, 2) wear plastic bags on their feet for a month to see how bad athletes foot can get.
It's weird.

Edit: They can be found here: http://www.okcupid.com/humor/index.html

You should have asked him how the experiments that he and the other OKC guys did with fattening up skinny people and seeing how much they could abuse their feet improved their dating.
>>>>>>>

I don't understand that comment at all. What?

I have not met one person on Match.com in person, and I live in NYC. I've had many successful dates with OKC. I think the case is closed here.

"Dating is more like eBay"

Pay per date? Surely that's what escorts are for?
Sorry, couldn't resist ;)

It's an interesting interview, but he doesn't really say much to persuade people (ok, me) back to OKC - his main points seem to be "We're free", "We have geeks" and "We're prettier then Plentyoffish".
I still don't agree that the social networking aspects are the best thing in online dating, but I suppose it can help you weed out folks.
