Welcome to part four of our week-long feature of Dungeons & Dragons new 4th edition book, Arcane Power.
Now it’s time for everyone’s favorite arcane bad boy, the Warlock.
#1 Level 1 Daily Spell: Fortune’s Reversal
“With a single word of power, you reverse a creature’s luck, turning fortune and happiness into misfortune and sorrow.”
There’s no doubting it – Mirande was drawn to being a warlock because she was never given the things she wanted as a child. She’s selfish, self-centered, and yes, a bitch. But you have to admit it, the chick’s got talent. Nothing makes Mirande smile wider than when she takes away the joy from an enemy who thinks he is winning in battle. (Second best: When she steals food from the rogue’s plate at dinner.)
#2 Level 6 Utility Spell: Life Siphon
“It’s not pretty, it’s not kind, but sometimes you need to draw power from an ally’s pain.”
His party probably should have realized it when they noticed the amount of jeweled and spiked belts he wore, pulled tight across his arms, legs, and neck. There’s something about Timmah that just isn’t right. He doesn’t seem to know who to root for during battle and sometimes cheers when the enemy scores a critical hit. What? Whose side is he on?
#3 Level 17 Encounter Spell: Sea Tyrant’s Fury
“Arcane waves sweep your foes to the ground as your harness the rage of the ancient Sea Tyrant.”
Who says that a warlock can’t be raised on a ship full of pirates? Synne is the daughter of the Dread Pirate (no, not Roberts) and made a pact with an evil spirit one night as she hid, begging the universe to provide her a way to avoid the lustful advances of her father’s men. And OH, does EVIL MAGIC do the trick! Seamen without semen. It’s wonderful… for her, at least.
#4 Level 29 Daily Spell: Eyes of the Victim
“From magic, you craft an ancient contagion to eat away your foes’ sight.”
Vaun is obsessed with sight. It’s not really a mystery since he was blind for the first 100 years of his life. When he was approached with the idea of gaining sight in exchange for a wee lil pact, he thought it was a great idea. Because really, if you can SEE, who cares if you have to be a little evil?
#5 Entrancing Mystic Attack 11: Hekiah’s Trance
“Your foe becomes lost in your eyes, shuffling in the direction of your gaze.”
Destia learned from a young age that the answer to “What do you want to be when you grow up?” was not “A succubus.” At least, that’s what everyone told her. But the tales of succubi always entranced her. How easy would it be to get everything she wanted by learning their ways! The path of the warlock has been fun for Destia, especially exercising control over others through her sparkling blue eyes.
The last installment of the Arcane Power series is tomorrow. Meet the Wizard!
