Do you feel a bit like Jabba lately? Or maybe you just have a little belly you’d like to get see gone, or a couple love handles you don’t exactly love.
Let’s face it. There are a lot of fat geeks out there.
I’m one of them.
So what are we going to do about it?
My Story
I’m sure there’s a couple people thinking, “Holy shit, I’ve made ‘No Fat Chicks’ jokes around E and she’s a fat chick? OMG!“ It’s okay, folks. Some people don’t like curves (or rolls, or whatever you want to call ‘em). I can’t fault you for what you are and aren’t attracted to, so breathe and chill. I still love ya.
I’ve battled with my weight for most of my life. I went on my first diet when I was in 5th grade. (I remember being upset because my weight was in the 100s while my classmates were still in double digits.) Either way, I’ve been there done that when it comes to diets.
My two main issues? I’m lazy and I’m an emotional eater. So when I’m upset, I don’t think “Let me make a delicious fruit salad.“ I think pizza. Pepperoni pizza. And maybe some boneless spicy Asian wings. Nom nom nom.
Many folks don’t know the whole story, but let’s just say that my old job was making me miserable. Because I absolutely LOVE to teach, I was miserable that it was making me miserable. Couple this with being on a medication that makes weight gain easy, and I’ve ballooned quite a bit in the past year.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m still one sexy geek girl! Sexy is a state of mind, and when I’m in that state of mind, nobody can stop me! Luckily, my wonderful boyfriend DaveTheGame thinks I’m sexy even when I’m having a not-so-sexy feeling day.
I’ve decided to harness the power of geeks everywhere so we can motivate each other to lose those extra pounds and get fit! I tossed the hashtag around on Twitter about a week ago and people are starting to pick up on it.
Are you ready for this?
The Getting Hot for GenCon Club
The first rule of #gettinghotforgencon Club is that you MUST talk about #gettinghotforgencon Club.
If you’re on Twitter, whenever you tweet about your fitness or eating habits, add the hashtag #gettinghotforgencon.
Join the Twibe too! There’s power in numbers, friends!
Then, whenever you see someone posting about how they are #gettinghotforgencon, you can send them some support and encouragement. Pretty nifty, right?
I’ve added tickers to my sidebar ———->
You can get your own tickers by visiting TickerFactory. You can set up your ticker to show your actual weight or just how many pounds you have lost and want to lose before GenCon Indy.
You can set up a Fitness tracker if you’d rather log the amount of minutes you spend working out rather than your weight. (This is great for those with the scrawny geek physique who want to build muscle!)
If you’re joining our cause (even if you’re not attending GenCon!), please post a comment below. I’m going to start a Getting Hot For GenCon page on my site where I’ll log my Wii Fit time and weigh-ins. If you do the same, go ahead and post a link in the comments below and we can all network together!
Let’s do this, geek friends!!

I understand totally, I wrote about the same thing in my blog a couple days ago. Sometimes the only thing that gets you going is the motivation of others.

Not just thinks, knows
I’ll try to steer you away from too many snacks and sweets during the quest, though, especially at D&D when things are so readily available. (I know I ate too much junk yesterday when fighting that Beholder… urrp)

I’ll join you, but we don’t think we’ll be able to make GenCon this year, sadly. My husband was laid off. Rar.
I wish I could attend to GenCon, but, being on Brazil, that makes it kinda hard.. D=
Anyway, I AM trying to enhance my fitness, so… count my in. *researching spell: Greater Draco’s Belly Desintegration* =P
As for my own food issues, I’ll site a recent post of mine:
“Trader Joe’s Cookies: All of them. Before these I thought food was love. Now I know that food can be a three-way.”
I am an emotional eater, and happy I am not alone.
Hey! Happy is an emotion. Omnom nom nom nom…

I’ll join in on the Getting Hot for Gencon club. I’m not what you’d call a chubby geek by any means (my actual chubby geek friends throw things when I talk about how out of shape I’ve gotten), but I’m not a stick thin geek either. I’m definitely out of shape and definitely an emotional eater. Getting a plan to get back in shape is a good idea, and something I need to do. I’m planning a 3-day walk up a 60 mile walking path for end of may, and should probably start getting in shape for that as well!
Well, I’ll sign on, though I won’t be at GenCon. Maybe get myself there in another couple years once the kids get a little bigger.
As I mentioned on Twitter a couple days ago, I should use the #gettinghotformywife tag, but I like the idea of having others around to give me a little nudge.
I don’t get on the scale very often (don’t even have one in the house) so I can’t keep quite as close track of every pound, but last week 2 people told me I looked like I was losing so I guess I’m doing well.
Biggest thing I’m working on right now is water instead of soda, better breakfasts (couple slices of toast instead of pork egg and cheese sandwiches), portion control, and less meat in general (more ‘rice and beans’ dishes with small amount of meat).
I’m also trying to walk a bit more, and trying to create a dumbell workout to build muscles a little.
Thanks,
Paul

Ok, I’m In!!!! Looking Forward To Gencon… But I NEED to lose weight.. Wow.. I really do.. Went To A Paranormal Convention This Weekend.. And After Walking Up 6 Flights Of Stairs, I thought I was Going To Die… WOW…
Weight is a big focus of mine right now. I never had a weight problem growing up, but I was left pretty pudgy from years of college eating (and, I’m a happy, celebratory kind of eater – who sees reasons to celebrate all the time). That sucked, but it wasn’t a big deal – until my blood pressure shot up and my liver starting going bad (and I don’t even drink). After years of trying to figure out why my body was failing on me, turns out it’s just that extra weight – apparently I’m just not built to carry extra weight, at ALL. And losing each individual pound has been like pulling teeth.
I’m now right on the border of “normal” for my weight, but I want to get as close as I can to my ideal weight eventually. I’ll join, even though I’m not going to GenCon, because I want to give encouragement as well as receive it.
Oh, by the way – I’ve made modifications to my diet (gradually, so it really has been a lifestyle change instead of a crash thing), but the major difference in FINALLY losing this weight has been the fact that I bought a treadmill in January. Still slow results, but now I’m actually GETTING results, where before I had none.
GenCon is the annual weight loss target date for myself and my diet buddy. It was funny when I saw this because just the other day she mentioned GenCon was coming up.
Last year I hit my goal of <200 by the Con, but since then laziness + stress has meant that I’ve slipped back up into the 208 – 210 range. While that’s a far cry from my old 250, I still want to get under 200 and stay there.

Is this open to people who aren’t going to GenCon? :-p Three weeks of exam eating has left me with a heart that feels like it’s been deep fried and a worryingly expanding (and already too bulky) waist line.
I’ve been using an iPhone app called WeightBot to monitor my weight. It’s pretty good as long as you aren’t going to be checking it every 5 minutes. Shows graphs of your weight change as well as various other stats.
Also, if you don’t mind me plugging a slightly political product aimed at guys trying to loose weight then I highly recommend Mike Huckabee’s “Quit Digging Your Grave With A Knife And Fork”. His politics aren’t to my taste, but it’s a pretty good commonsense book about weight-loss that isn’t preachy, doesn’t have a gimmick or stupid eating plan. It’s also written by a middle aged guy for middle aged guys, unlike just about every other diet and weightloss book.

I use to be one of those kids who had the matabolism of a hyperactive weasel. Unfortunately, my keg (My 12 pack equivilent) came about thanks to a month-long hospital stay and a serious lack of energy.
Now, if I get my blogs in order, I may have to sign myself up for this as I’m hoping to lose what I can over the summer before school starts anew.

Count me in girl! My target is to drop that first digit of my weight by one and I plan to do this by jogging 4 km and doing 20-30 full abs crunches, 6 days a week until Gen Con.

Hiya GDG and friends. As well as being a lover of all things RPG, I am a professional Personal Trainer.
Congratulations on your decision to reduce your aero-drag, apply forced obsolescence to your wardrobe and increase your physical capacity for awesome. Good choice.
Please let me give you a little advice. Effective and sustainable weight change has very little to do with what you eat! By far the most important component is Activity. I tell my clients:
Do more than you Chew.
You should focus on Activity, Recovery (rest) and Intake (food and bevvies) in that order. Do lots of things, especially things that use your full body like walking, running, swimming, even wii tennis. Rest. Your body needs to recover to implement effective change. If you are not getting enough sleep you cannot effect sustainable change to your body. Intake. We all know what is good and what is not. Do NOT eat diet labelled foods. They generally have poor nutritional value and despite fancy marketing campaigns, are not your ally.
ChattyDM, my advice is to forget about the crunches and do some lunges or rotational core exercises instead.
If you want any more advice, have questions or seek inspiration, please contact me through my Blog.

Wow! Great plan, Chatty (and everyone else who’s working off some weight). Seems like many geeks are looking to trim down. I don’t think I’ll be hitting Gencon, but I am hitting the gym 4 times a week.
More power to you all.
