I just started watching Sarah Conner Chronicles, so this is good timing for me.

I think the reason they try to prevent Skynet from being built or destroying it in its infancy, is that it probably has no location anymore. Once Skynet gets onto the internet there is little need for some single terminal somewhere. I'm sure the machines in the future have set up a global wi-fi network for themselves. Skynet is in the air they breathe. It is an omnipresent robot god.

Agreed, though it is occasionally interesting to see such an AI's interpretation of itself.

Take the Architect from the Matrix movies, for instance. His "appearance" as a distinguished man in a white room lets us know a lot about how the Architect sees himself, while never giving us a "pure form" visual (I don't count the "disembodied voice on the surface of the world" version as a pure interpretation, either).

The Borg Queen from the Star Trek movies is another example, though I don't think it was done as well.

For the new Terminator movie, a similar "self-interpretation" (projection, or robot that can move independently of Skynet) could be interesting.
