Did You Miss Free RPG Day 2009?

Did you miss Free RPG Day 2009 this year?  If so, you came to the right place!  I happen to have a copy of the Eberron adventure, Khyber’s Harvest, that I am giving away to one lucky reader!

Just leave me a comment below saying why you couldn’t make it to a Free RPG Day store.   Entries will be accepted for one week – one per person, please!   (I can see your IP!)

More on the adventure…

Oh, and for those that don’t know, it comes with a dungeon tile!

Go on.   Leave a comment.  Remember, your comment must mention why you couldn’t make it to a Free RPG Day store.

Contest ends Tuesday, June 30th.

  1. Matt says:

I was running my own D&D game at a game shop that didn’t participate in Free RPG Day. (They are mostly a board / card game shop.) The closest game shop participating was over 1.5hr drive away. Bummed me out. But our session was really fun and I got 2 new players. :]

  2. Brandon says:

I did not make it to Free RPG Day 2009 because I did not know that there was such a thing.

  3. Michael Ruff says:

I wasn’t able to make it to Free RPG day because my parents were visiting for my birthday and I spent the whole day showing them all the touristy stuff here. >.<

  4. Rev. Lazaro says:

Man, our local “FLGS” went under years ago and then re-opened as a console gaming center and only sells Magic: The Gathering for tournament stuff. No Pen & Paper RPG books on the grounds “Everyone will just go home and download them anyway.” Our other option is a Hastings Bookstore, which apparently didn’t participate. Closest Free RPG store was about 1 to 2 hours drive :(

  5. Scott says:

My local game store (the usual friendly part is debatable) doesn’t ever seem to support things like Free RPG Day or World Wide D&D Day. I could have driven across state to a shop that did, but I would have had to cancel my D&D game for that.

  6. I couldn’t make it to free RPG day since there aren’t any participating store in my localtion :(

  7. Bryant says:

So we moved to Cockeysville, MD the week before Free RPG Day. We actually thought this was awesome, since it gave us an excuse to go around to a few local game stores and check them out. Renaissance Games and Legend Comics and Games were both listed as participating — great! So we got in our car (my sweetie and me; she’s also a gamer) and took off to hunt gaming stores.

Well. It turns out that taking the back roads from Cockeysville over to Fallston is not as easy as you’d think, especially if there’s a cop closing one of the state roads for some reason. We’d felt upbeat when we stopped to get gas and the attendant was reading a Warhammer 40K army book (nice guy, very friendly), but by the time we got out to Renaissance Games… they were out of material. It took us three hours to get there. Penalty of being new to the area, I guess…

And Legends didn’t have anything when we got over there, either. So that was the end of our hopes. However! Getting a copy of the Eberron adventure would pretty much make all our sadness go away. We’re shallow like that.

  8. Michael Erb says:

We had very few shops participating in West Virginia, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to go. Of all the adventures and swag being given away, the Eberron adventure was definitely the one I most regretted not being able to see.
.-= Michael Erb´s last blog ..AJ Menden books signing! =-.

  9. Gianavel says:

I had no coin for RPG stuff on Free RPG day and wouldn’t feel right about not buying stuff from a store that’s giving away free merch.

  10. WolfStar76 says:

I missed Free RPG Day simply because I hadn’t heard of it until it was too late.

And with me being a big Eberron Fan to boot it was a double kick in the shins. :)

  11. Brian says:

The nearest participating Free RPG day store was about a two hour drive away and, even if I had planned to go, my grandmother went into the hospital that day.

  12. Jim DelRosso says:

I didn’t make it because I spent the day trying to resurrect my dead computer. I apparently lacked the correct ritual components.

  13. Graham says:

I almost didn’t get to have a Free RPG Day, as the Free RPG Day people apparently screwed up the orders to a bunch of Canadian stores, and my FLGS didn’t get anything.

Luckily, there was another collectibles shop (not really rpgs at all, mostly comics and action figures) who got a shipment for some reason.

If not for them, I would have had to resort to driving across town to the un-FLGS. And while taking free stuff from them is fine, I’d rather not support that store if I can help it.

So, not an entry into the contest, as I have mine. Just an anecdote/rant.

  14. Marcel Beaudoin says:

I have a very good reason why I couldn’t make it to free RPG day. Sunday was fathers day, and my daughters (19 months, 4 years old) had a whole day of fun planned for me that involved me taking them to the beach, to the park, walking the dog, drawing and napping together.

  15. adamjford says:

I made it to a Free RPG Day store, technically, but they were out of the adventure. :( Does that count? I hope so.

  16. Graham says:

    @Marcel -

That’s a great reason for missing anything! But… Free RPG Day was Saturday…

  17. AsmodeusLore says:

My fellowship trekked across the Frosthoar mountains for three days, searching for the pass that would allow us to enter the Valley of Ruin. Among our party was my ever-faithful guardian, Twilla, who’s sword and shield have never faltered in battle. My childhood friend, Brodus, was with us, and he merrily entertained us with tales of encouragement and strange bits of bardic lore. He had adventured with Twilla and I before. And traveling with us for the first time was a strange ranger of the wildlands, who simply called himself Scout. His stealth was impeccable and his aim was deadly. He had come highly recommended from trusted acquaintances. And of course, there was me. Don’t let my scholarly robes and frail form fool you. When I wield the arcane powers taught to me by my mentors, I leave all foes seared and vulnerable to my allies attacks.

It was at the third day that Scout picked out the gap between the peaks, marking our way out of the frost-capped mountains that had blocked our progress. Brodus had no tales for us now as all of our thoughts turned towards the deeds before us. Into the Valley we crept, seeking treasure untold. Our goal was a lost scroll containing the exact location of a fiendish lair. Ready to face whatever guardians protected the ruins of this valley, we crept into the ruins. We all had a feeling of dread in our stomach as we spotted a pedestal, wrapped in vines, with a scroll case placed atop it. Surely, it could not be this easy?

Twilla took the lead, wary of any traps that might spring. She approached the pedestal and carefully took the scroll in hand. Unraveling carefully, the look of shock on her face was evident to us all. She could not bear to tell us what she saw. She handed the scroll to me without a word. And there, I saw the words which caused my heart to fall, and my hope to falter…

“Google Maps cannot find the destination you are searching for.”

  18. Marcel Beaudoin says:

    D’oh!!

  19. James Barrett says:

I have a 15 month old son, and my wife was sick. Had to hold down the fort.

  20. Felipe says:

I couldn’t make it to Free RPG Day because there were no participating stores in my entire country. It’s not easy being a gamer in Brazil.

  21. Dave T. Game says:

Bryant- you actually had a lot of options from Cockeysville, e and I ended up going to Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie around 2 and they had plenty left. But at least now you know your way around!

(obviously, this is not a contest entry :) )

  22. David M says:

Neither of the game stores in Cape Town participated this year, even though we had organised several people to comment subtly at the top of thier voices whenever they visted the shops. Also puleeeeeeeeaaaaassssseeeeeee *puppyeyes*

  23. Paper Dragon says:

I live in Portugal, and there wasn’t a single store running the Free RPG Day. By the time i found out there was a Keith Baker’s adventure set in Eberron, i got super sad, because the closest store was London, i think, and no super airplain ride to take me. But the good thing is, i got the Eberron Players Guide yesterday. Not super sad anymore :)

  24. Teresa C says:

As far as I know there were no stores in my state that participated but even if there was I would not of been able to go as I have 3 Satan Spawn claiming to be mine and I fail my DC Save every time I try to escape them as they cast Web.

  25. Megan says:

I promised my husband months ago that he could take off for a day-long dirtbike ride by himself on June 20th. Which left me watching our toddler by myself, and neither of us would appreciate the 1.5 hour drive each way to the gaming store.

Plus, I was hiding from my string of bad luck last week: a dog bite on Tuesday, a kitchen fire on Wednesday, a neck injury on Thursday, lost my debit card on Friday…eek *hides*

  26. newbiedm says:

I couldn’t make it because the crap-tastic gaming scene in miami is so bad that no stores participated!

  27. Jae Walker says:

    NOT AN ENTRY

I feel even MORE blessed by Evolution Games in Lansing MI, our FLGS, which has a few very nice rooms set aside for RPG players and always has plenty of dice, drinks, snacks, games, minis, cards and even puppets! (Also a very good place for card players and miniatures war gamers, who have special tables.)

Your stories make me appreciate this wonderful place, run by a gamer for gamers (he just happens to be part of the biggest commercial real-estate family in town).

I’m assuming linkage is allowed – if not, my apologies and delete the heck out of the message. Evolution Games

  28. Nicholas says:

I would have liked to go but I was being a groomsman in my brother’s wedding! Not that there are any local gamestores anymore anyway.

Ah, well I wouldn’t use a premade adventure anyway, so this isn’t an entry.
.-= Nicholas´s last blog ..It’s my birthday. Give me your soul. =-.

  29. Tom says:

    My FLGS isn’t very “L”..

  30. Ross McGovern says:

I didn’t make it to Free RPG Day because I learned about Free RPG Day the day after Free RPG Day. However what I *did* do was I sat down and joined my very first RPG, a game of Trail of Cthulhu, creating a very studied and interesting tortured artist character to play, and promptly got him killed before end of play. My first character and my first death in one session. Nothing could ever help me get over this loss. Except one thing could make me feel a tiny little bit better, i.e. if I won this copy of “Khyber’s Harvest”. It will always be the memorial copy dedicated to Jerome McCoy, artist, who never did find his lost love. Ahhh poor Jerome.

  31. I had to work, of course.

  32. Dylan McIntosh says:

I didn’t get a chance to go because I had to work 16 hours on Saturday. I attempted to get there, but my flgs was all shut down and locked up when I stopped by there.

  33. Menteroso says:

I missed it because the only participating store in my state decided not to participate at the last moment.

  34. Simba says:

Well, I live in Hungary. That’s how far away from the nearest participating shop? I guess you understand why I did not go.

  35. Warren Davidson says:

Spent all day helping the aged (do you believe me?)

  36. James Harris says:

    Deployed to Iraq. :-/

It’s too bad, too–I’m running a game for some of the folks in the Comm Squadron over here, we’re getting to the end of Keep on the Shadowfell, and we’re gonna need something to do after they knock over Kalarel.

  37. J. Carpio says:

Unfortunately the part of Connecticut I live in did not have any FreeRPG day sponsors for about 100+ miles in any direction.
I have been running a 4e Eberron game for sometime now, it would be nice to play an actual published adventure.

  38. Pen says:

I live in Cape Town, South Africa and NONE of the LGS here participated (something about exchange rates and lack of time or some such BS when they were asked loudly and repeatedly to get involved.) I am also a huge Eberron fangirl (I have offered my spare-bed/couch to Keith for a visit) and so this would be awesome for me. So please … one gamer girl to another … you know you want to help one in a developing country.

    PS: Love your blog!

  39. James says:

For whatever reason none of the game stores in Central Ohio participated in Free RPG Day this year. Called them all and they all acted like they had never heard of it before – even the store I went to on Free RPG Day last year.

    Oh, well.

  40. Weldon says:

None of my local stores were doing the Free RPG.. Closest One I could find was 65 miles away.. Gotta love living in the sticks!
