Back-to-School or Geek Holiday?

It’s been (cough) several years since I left my school days behind, but I still love back-to-school time.  I look forward to the crisp days of fall, the feeling of a fresh start, maybe even a fresh haircut… and sales.  Yes, it seems everything I like and need goes on sale at back-to-school-time.  As someone who especially loves books, electronics, cross-body bags, and new episodes of Doctor Who and Downton Abbey, I feel almost like it’s a geek holiday.

And yes, it’s only the middle of August, but that is back-to-school time in many areas.  And as geeks, you should be aware!  Even if you don’t share my love for lunchboxes, now’s the time that all the good stuff goes on sale, so you can at least save cash and put it towards your replica piece of Valyrian Steel.  Here’s a few ideas of which you can take advantage (didja like that, eh?):

Clothing doesn’t have to mean plaid skirts

Yes, so maybe you don’t need to stock up on velcro shoes and khaki shorts, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock a good back-to-school sale.  Threadless, for example, is having a sale until August 17th.  Some states have tax-free weeks or weekends for items like clothing and school supplies, so check out your local sites for info.  And remember: lots of stores are releasing their fall lines right now.  It’s a chance to save when it’s all new, unlike buying stuff on clearance at the end of the season (which I normally tend to do).

It says it’s for dorms, but come on now

Sometimes occurring at the same time as back-to-school sales, sometimes a little later, are the back-to-college sales.  Honestly, though, most of these sales are just as great for an apartment or a house.  Sure, a beanbag might not be a featured piece of furniture anymore – although the difference between a gaming area and a dorm room can be minimal – but you can still take advantage of deals on things like bedding, towels, bath supplies, kitchen appliances, and storage.

In fact, looking at sites like Bed Bath & Beyond and Target, I see a lot of featured items that I would have never used in college (like a sink accessory set – I shared a co-ed bathroom with tiny sinks and ten other people!) but which I might consider now, thanks.  What makes them “college”?  Bright, fun colors.  I guess I’ll find a way to cope with my evident immaturity.

Thinking in style (or at least caffeinated)

Maybe you actually are headed back to school, or you want to brighten up your workspace.  Now is a great time to do so, as office supply stores also get in on the act.  I like Office Max’s site because they have it divided up into categories (elementary school, college, etc) and they didn’t forget the grown-up geeks better known as teachers (who, by the way, also like to jazz up their classrooms with zombies, Doctor Who and bacon).  And if you’re in the market for a laptop, game console or similar electronic purchase, now may be a good time to hit up stores like Best Buy or Amazon.

But don’t forget your tried-and-true homes of geekery!  ThinkGeek has tons of cute, smart items of fun that make any space feel fun.  This is especially important when you are away from home, so if you know anyone heading off to college, you might consider sending them along with a Back-to-School Gift Bag  Or, just make your own care package of customized geekery, wait a few weeks, and send it to them.  That first semester of college can be a real drag, and care packages are like Christmas.

And who doesn’t like to display their geek passions on items they use every day?  A few things I, in particular, have my eye on include this 70′s Aperture Diner Mug and this Hufflepuff scarf.

What about you?  Do you like back-to-school season, or does it stir up that dream where you can’t remember your locker combination?  Are you going to be hitting up any of these sales?  And what item of geekery cheers up your 9-to-5?  Share your thoughts below!
