Will and Rowan

Hullo, Gentle Readers. Well, as I write this, it’s two days before the Silver Kingdom Renaissance Festival. If you have the bandwidth this Father’s Day weekend, and you’ve ever wondered what I, your GGG, sounds like when he sings, come check it out in Charlton, MA. You can find details here. End of obligatory plug. If you’re looking for me, you can see what I look like in the picture attached to this article. I’m the fat, loud one in the blue muffin hat with the bedraggled blue … [Read more...]

Seeing Red – GGG Talks About a Certain Controversial Moment in Game of Thrones

Red Wedding

Okay, so I don’t want to spoil anything for anybody. If you haven’t seen the last two episodes of Game of Thrones, Season Three, please stop reading right now. Once you’ve watched them, then you can come back and read this article, but I can’t articulate my feelings without massive spoilers. Everyone still here saw the episodes? Or doesn’t care if I spoil them? Good. Let’s get on with it. The Red Wedding So episode 9 gave us one of the most horrifying scenes in the whole A … [Read more...]

Mystery Men, Dark Avengers, and Four-Color Heroes – GGG Ponders on Developing a Campaign Setting for a Superhero RPG?

Supers

While doing some spring cleaning through my RPGs, I came across my notes for a Silver Age Sentinels campaign setting called Tremont City. As many folks know, I'm a big superhero comic fan, and I wanted my setting to feel like the DC Universe - a world that had been developed in comics over a period of years, rather than in days to weeks by me. When I started, I developed a history and campaign bible. In it, I outlined some tricks for how I would try to create this artificial conceit of a … [Read more...]

Do You Believe in Magic? – GGG Reviews the Re-released Spell Compendium

Spell Compendium

Before the days when the only spells wizards were worried about getting in their spellbooks were rituals, D&D 3rd edition had spells…a lot of spells. There were spells in modules, spells in handbooks, spells in sourcebooks, and spells in monster manuals. Spells were everywhere, and it was very difficult, when you were playing a spellcaster, to have every book that contained all the spells you wanted. In their great wisdom (and no, I’m not being sarcastic), the good people of Wizards … [Read more...]

Game-Changers – GGG Looks at Alternate Ways to End Combat in an RPG

Battle

Combat is an integral part of many RPGs. In some, it’s a necessary evil. In others, like D&D, it’s an exciting part of the game. Sometimes, the PCs are facing truly evil and villainous foes that need to be wiped from the face of your campaign world. Sometimes, however, you want to have a battle end in something other than a complete massacre of one side or another. What if the PCs are facing honorable foes who’ve been duped into fighting them? Or what if they’re facing foes who … [Read more...]

Man of Iron, Man of Steel

Superman-Ironman-Hanging-Out-superman-5316034-800-600

Two much anticipated superhero movies debut in 2013. As of this writing, one is here, and another will be here in a few weeks. Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel both feature iconic properties of their respective comic book companies. Each features a character with some level of proven box office draw. Each wants to be the summer blockbuster. But who’s going to end up on top? I thought I would offer my own feelings on the subject. I will preface this by saying that I haven’t seen either one yet. … [Read more...]

Outside the Margins – GGG Ponders on the Vanishing “Gay Ghetto”

Calamus

When I was seeing She Kills Monsters last week (you did read my last article, didn’t you?), it was playing in Boston’s South End, an area that was very much the gay ghetto of Boston. I got to enjoy a slice of Emilio’s Pizza (so very good), but so many of the stores I used to visit there are gone. It got me thinking about the vanishing nature of what was once a big part of my life. Boston used to have two amazing gay bookstores – Glad Day Books and We Think the World of You, both of … [Read more...]

She Kills Monsters – GGG Reviews a New Piece of Geek Theater

ENTB_SheKillsreview_0418

I had a completely different article I intended to share, but then, yesterday (April 26), I saw a performance that made me stop what I was doing and write this article. The performance was of She Kills Monsters, a play by New York playwright Qui Nguyen. This was a great play and a fantastic performance. It’s been a long time since I laughed out loud so hard at a play, and I also found myself choked up a couple of times. The play had some twists and turns that were predictable, and others … [Read more...]

LARP-Prep

LARP

So, this weekend, for the first time in many years, I played a LARP for a full weekend, as opposed to running one. I found myself lured to a game called Cottington Woods due to it being a brand new LARP that professes itself as a “Dark Faerie Tale” LARP. (We’ve talked about how much I love faerie tales before.) I was intrigued, and I liked the write-up of the concepts on their website, so I decided to give it a try. It was excellent, and I’ll be returning, but that’s not the point of … [Read more...]

Still Playin’ After All These Years – LOTRO’s Sixth Anniversary

lotro

When you look at the events of J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic epic fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, Frodo and his companions set out from Bag-End on the 23rd of September in one year and returns to it on November 3rd of the next. In just a little bit more than a year, they had had their adventure, recovered from it, and returned. It’s fairly amazing to think, then, that Lord of the Rings Online, the MMORPG based on the same story, will have been running successfully for six years as of April … [Read more...]
