Geeky Goals for Adulthood

sailormoon1

In general, I can't stand New Year's Resolutions.  I get why people make them - any starting date for any change is arbitrary, so why not do so while you have the support of the people around you? - but I'm personally bad at them.  My resolutions tend to be things like losing weight and cutting out soda.  Let me tell you, trying to make dramatic eating changes and Lift All the Things while still coming out of a holiday sugar coma is a guaranteed recipe to make me cranky.  Oh, and as for … [Read more...]

Why It’s Awesome To Be Gay (In Toronto)

CN Tower lit up for Pride (c) QueensQuayLife

A few weeks ago, I packed up the wife and took off to her Tennessee home for a visit with the in-laws. It was my first time that far south in the States, and I was caught off-guard by how very different it was south of the Mason-Dixon Line. As a butch Canadian woman who has never had to hide my light under a bushel, if you will, I knew, intellectually, that ‘I’m here, I’m queer’ wouldn’t fly very well in small-town Tennessee, but I was unprepared for how hard that reality would hit me. … [Read more...]

Geeky New Year’s Resolutions: Mid-Year Accountability Report

calvin-hobbes-new-years-resolutions

Did anyone see where the first half of 2011 went? If you find it, would you tell it to come back to me? Because I had a lot of things I wanted to accomplish, and I’m sure I could get them done if I could just have those 6 months back. Seriously, time flies when you’re having fun. Among all the things I wanted to get done while time was flying away from me were my geeky New Year’s resolutions. I posted them in my column so I’d have public accountability to hold me to task, and also … [Read more...]

Movies That Molded a Geek: O Brother, Where Art Thou?

obrother

Most of the previous Movies That Molded a Geek have been films that I saw as a child.  Still, we never stop growing (inside), and our new favorites come to define us.  I recently realized that one of my favorite movies is over ten years old.  I saw it when I was still in high school, and if it didn't directly determine my future taste in movies, it's at least indicative of the trend.  Not to mention, this is a seriously geeky movie.  Thus, let's talk about the Coen Brothers' O Brother, … [Read more...]

Today is a Good Day to Gay: Rob Ford and Toronto Pride

ford

Wow, what a week to be gay! The city that never sleeps is now the city that occasionally sleeps with someone of the same sex – which is totally rad. My wife and I watched the vote being streamed live from our living room, safe in Canada, and still started crying when the result was announced. It seems like all around us the world is edging towards being a happier place for gays and lesbians and other initials in the acronym to be in. Up here in Canada, where I have held the right to marry … [Read more...]
