Ad Infinitum – Pondering on the Nature of a Multiverse

Earth 2

Okay, to begin with, I’m writing an article which might be rather spoiler-y. If you fear you might be playing a current popular video-game with, shall we say, an infinite nature that this article might spoil, you might want to stop reading now. Just saying. Everyone still here? Good. While watching Steve play the ending of Bioshock Infinite with its musings on alternate realities binding together, we started a small discussion on the nature of alternate realities and multiverses. It’s … [Read more...]

KK’s Keen Comics, March 13, 2013 Releases

Batman18

Greetings comics fans! Some very strong issues this week. But first, a quick plug. For a while now, some friends of mine, Caytlin Vilbrandt and Samantha Mathis, have been publishing an online comic called Walking on Broken Glass. It's about werewolves and magic and monsters and romance and dark prophecies and all kinds of good stuff, and I'm in love with Caytlin's art. They're running an indiegogo campaign now for a print run of the latest issue, and you can get earlier issues through it. … [Read more...]

No Joke – GGG Looks at Why Certain Villains Are So Compelling

6c_119962_0_BatmanTheKillingJoke0

Hullo, Gentle Readers. As of the time I’m sitting down to write this article, an extremely compelling storyline has just wrapped up in the pages of the various Batman comics. Called The Death of the Family, it involved the return of the Joker after a period of absence from the pages of the various books. This Joker was just as terrifying as in many of the greatest Joker stories I’ve read over the years. He’s unbalanced, obsessed with Batman, and seems completely capable of anything, no … [Read more...]

Big Heroes on the Small Screen – GGG Reviews Some Recent DC Comics Animated Movies

elite01-1339564854

Hi ho, Gentle Readers. As you well know, I’m a huge fan of superhero comics – DC Comics to be precise. I’ve read a number of their titles for years, I’ve played their roleplaying games, and I love their movies and TV shows. There have been a recent spate of releases of animated movies based on DC Comics’ stable of heroes, but I’ve only recently had a chance to sit down a watch a few of them. I thought I’d share my opinion on these recent works, some of which are quite … [Read more...]

For the Ladiez: 5 Great Geeky Fanservice Moments for (Straight) Women

Shepard ogles a shirtless Jacob

Newsflash: Both men and women have libidos and enjoy ogling a little scantily clad flesh from time to time. But while geek culture has more than its fair share of fanservice and scanty clothing designed to appeal to straight men (and possibly lesbians), there isn’t quite as much pandering to a straight female (or gay male) audience. We don’t really have many gender flipped equivalents to, say, the skimpy Theiss costumes in original Star Trek or the entirety of the Dead or Alive game … [Read more...]

Who Watches (or Reads) the Watchmen Prequels? – GGG Looks at a Followup to a Classic

before-watchmen-list-head

I’m always dubious about prequels or sequels to things that seem complete. The original Matrix, for example, was a good, solid movie. It didn’t need sequels. When I saw the 2nd movie, I vowed I would never see the third. From what I hear, I made the right decision. Nevertheless, sometimes, a prequel or sequel comes along that enhances or even surpasses the original. The Hobbit is a charming children’s book, but The Lord of the Rings is an incredible extension of the world it was set … [Read more...]

Comics: No Girls Allowed? Bah!

wonderwoman328

My post last week about the new Kevin Smith show Comic Book Men and the comments it generated, both on the site and Twitter, got me thinking about the role of women in comics. Not just female characters in comic books themselves, but the place of female fans, writers, artists, and creators in the notably male-dominated realm of the comic book world. I dove into discussions of women writers and read scores of “how to get your girlfriend to like comics” posts, talked to bloggers on all ends of … [Read more...]

The Super Seven – Why GGG Loves the New Justice League

justiceleaguetumblerfull_02

I absolutely love superhero comics, with DC Comics being my favorites. There’s something incredibly iconic about their characters that works for me on an almost myth-like level. So when DC said they were playing clearing-house with their continuity again, I was distressed, to say the least. As I’ve recounted elsewhere, The New 52 is really working for me. There are so many things I’m enjoying about it. I love the sharp, fresh writing on Aquaman. I love the redefinition of the Green and … [Read more...]

Brave New World: Aquaman and Catwoman

Catwoman and Aquaman

In Canada today it is Family Day, or as it is more commonly known, February Doesn't Have Any Statutory Holidays So Let's Make One Up and Give People a Day Off Day. I will be celebrating it by surrounding myself with my own kind of family: my wife, my cats, the staff at the world-famous Fran's Diner, a leather-loving jewel thief, a disgustingly-scarred gunslinger, and a few assorted members of the Justice League. Yes, I'm still on my DC kick, revelling in the unfolding mysteries of the New 52. … [Read more...]

Brave New World: The DCnU Reboot and the New 52

NEW_52

I’ll admit, I dismissed it at first. My initial reaction to the rebooting of the extensive DC Universe into fifty-two streamline and reimagined titles was one of disinterest at best, and at worst, disgust at corporate greed. It’s just a ploy, I said. To make more money, I said. A gimmick. And, well, it still is on some level. But what I didn’t anticipate about the DCnU is that it would be just good, it would work. I have been sucked in. I’ve drunk the Catwoman Kool-aid. The New 52 … [Read more...]
