Saga #10 Cover

Unlike last week, the comics god smiled on me this week with a heavy pile of good comics! With lots of choices, this week's picks are truly the cream of the crop, including a very good candidate for Best Comic that's currently running, and it's not your normal superhero fare. Saga #10 This is one of the most original science fiction epics in any medium in years. It has a basic Romeo/Juliet premise, with the story focusing on two soldiers from planets that have been at war for as long as anyone … [Read more...]

Who Watches (or Reads) the Watchmen Prequels? – GGG Looks at a Followup to a Classic

before-watchmen-list-head

I’m always dubious about prequels or sequels to things that seem complete. The original Matrix, for example, was a good, solid movie. It didn’t need sequels. When I saw the 2nd movie, I vowed I would never see the third. From what I hear, I made the right decision. Nevertheless, sometimes, a prequel or sequel comes along that enhances or even surpasses the original. The Hobbit is a charming children’s book, but The Lord of the Rings is an incredible extension of the world it was set … [Read more...]

Welcome to the Party: Northstar’s Wedding and the Revealing of the Rainbow Lantern

northstar

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the union of this superhero, and this completely normal guy, and the ensuing media storm that followed. Right now? It’s good to be gay – that is, if you’re a superhero. Marvel’s Northstar tied the knot with his civilian boyfriend last week, and this week DC announced that as part of their New 52 reboot, the original human holder of the Green Lantern ring has been retconned queer. Which is awesome! He’s a powerful business man … [Read more...]

Versus: The Glory of Super-powered Team-Ups and Crossovers

ArchiePunisher

FIRST THINGS FIRST. I haven’t seen The Avengers yet. I know. I have failed all of you, and I will attempt to atone for it by saying two Iron Mans and a Hail Thor. In the meantime, before ANYONE SPOILS ME FOR AVENGERS (and I swear the first person to squeak ‘Snape kills Dumbledore!’ gets Mjolnir upside the head), let’s talk about superhero team-ups and crossovers. The Avengers, since their inception, has always been a melange of existing heroes and the occasional new recruit – … [Read more...]

Comics: No Girls Allowed? Bah!

wonderwoman328

My post last week about the new Kevin Smith show Comic Book Men and the comments it generated, both on the site and Twitter, got me thinking about the role of women in comics. Not just female characters in comic books themselves, but the place of female fans, writers, artists, and creators in the notably male-dominated realm of the comic book world. I dove into discussions of women writers and read scores of “how to get your girlfriend to like comics” posts, talked to bloggers on all ends of … [Read more...]

Brave New World: Aquaman and Catwoman

Catwoman and Aquaman

In Canada today it is Family Day, or as it is more commonly known, February Doesn't Have Any Statutory Holidays So Let's Make One Up and Give People a Day Off Day. I will be celebrating it by surrounding myself with my own kind of family: my wife, my cats, the staff at the world-famous Fran's Diner, a leather-loving jewel thief, a disgustingly-scarred gunslinger, and a few assorted members of the Justice League. Yes, I'm still on my DC kick, revelling in the unfolding mysteries of the New 52. … [Read more...]

Brave New World: The DCnU Reboot and the New 52

NEW_52

I’ll admit, I dismissed it at first. My initial reaction to the rebooting of the extensive DC Universe into fifty-two streamline and reimagined titles was one of disinterest at best, and at worst, disgust at corporate greed. It’s just a ploy, I said. To make more money, I said. A gimmick. And, well, it still is on some level. But what I didn’t anticipate about the DCnU is that it would be just good, it would work. I have been sucked in. I’ve drunk the Catwoman Kool-aid. The New 52 … [Read more...]

Pride & Prejudice & Peter Parker: Classic Literature Goes Comic Book

emma

So the other night I’m at home, relaxing with my wife and looking forward to a bit of TV – we’re powerdiscing through The Golden Girls and Desperate Housewives right now – when she distracts me as she’s queueing up the next episode. Which turns out not to involve Bea Arthur in any way. It was Wishbone. She found me Wishbone! I have the greatest wife ever. What is the story, Wishbone? Please, tell me, I am your rapt audience for the next twenty-two minutes. After watching Wishbone … [Read more...]

Lessons from Vintage Comics

Four issues of the original Jonah Hex - part of my garage sale find.

I love garage sales. The adage ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ is never so true as in the halcyon days of summer. Garage sales are the reason I am the proud owner of all the Bond flicks through License to Kill, a talking tribble, and the Star Wars box set – original theatrical releases. I’m a little addicted to VHS tapes. I have one of The Cutting Edge that proudly announces in the previews “Coming soon to theatres – Aladdin!” My latest find was a small stack of … [Read more...]

Caring for Your Comics: A Cautionary Tale

(from blue_j)

When I graduated from college, a friend offered to store a few boxes of comics at her house until I got settled. Whirlwind marriage, new house, cut to six months later and I had no idea where my comics were. Neither did she, unfortunately. Her father could have benefited from this short lesson in the proper care of comic books and trade paperbacks: Step One: Don’t use them to prop up a workbench in a shed inhabited by feral cats. Step Two: See Step One. Status of the bulk of my … [Read more...]
