PAX Prime Panel: Fantasia: Music Evolved

I've attended PAX East for the past few years, but this year I had the opportunity to attend the mother-con, PAX Prime.  Though there are dozens of panels to choose from, there was one caught my attention immediately: a panel about a collaboration between Harmonix and Disney's Fantasia.  Though I obviously knew about the other big Disney game of the year, I hadn't heard about this at all (I suppose my attention was diverted during E3).  But as a woman who loves Disney, loves Harmonix, loves … [Read more...]

To Disney Infinity and Beyond!

So, I need distractions like I need a hole in the head, but we got a new game this week that’s intensely distracting. Disney’s much anticipated Disney Infinity is finally here. If you’re not aware of this game, it uses much the same technology as the popular Skylanders game. The game comes with a special base unit, and, when you place real figurines on the base, they translate into the game, allowing you to play that particular monster or character. In this case, however, the figurines are of … [Read more...]

The Things We Leave Behind: Why?

A long time ago (the 1990s), when I was a freshman in high school, I decided to carry a McDonald's Happy Meal plastic pumpkin pail as a purse/pencil box.  I have no idea what possessed me to do this, but I thought it was adorable and funny (baby irony, I suppose).  When it was no longer the Halloween season, I spotted a tin Sailor Moon lunchbox at a store I loved.  I carried some form of lunchbox for the remainder of high school. Even as I write this, I cringe.  I associate the lunchbox purse … [Read more...]

Out of the Cartoon Closet

During my most recent stay at Disney World, I had a conversation while I was lounging at the pool with my nephew and my husband. The following day was National Coming Out Day (see my previous article on the subject), and we started discussing creating a custom T-shirt in case we happened to be at Disney World the following year, or some other year, during National Coming Out Day. Not shockingly, our idea for the shirt involved a number of Disney characters, perhaps carrying a pride flag. My … [Read more...]

“God Bless Us, Every One”: The Power of A Christmas Carol (and the 7 Geekiest Versions)

Like J, I am a Christmas geek. It’s not so much that I have a geek-themed Christmas – apart from a few Firefly ornaments on the tree and a lot of video games underneath – but  that I fling myself into the sparkly, wrapping-paper covered trappings with the same enthusiasm as I fling myself into Lord of the Rings marathons. We all have our special Christmas rituals – the gingerbread, the lighting of the tree, the fifteen rounds of the 12 Days of Christmas – but mine is a bit odd; for me, my … [Read more...]

The Christmas Geek

Ah, it's that time of year again.  It's the middle of December and I'm well into the thick of my personal holiday season, which typically starts after Thanksgiving but has been known to start much earlier in November. In years past I've written about how geeks put their own personal stamp on Christmas - think Star Wars-themed trees and the like.  But this year - in fact, just today - I realized something with a start.  I don't put my own geek spin on Christmas.  Christmas is something I geek … [Read more...]

The Parks They Are a-Changin’ – GGG Ponders on Disney Nostalgia & Change

Hullo again, Gentle Readers. Disney is still looming large as we slouch towards October. My mood is definitely influenced by the Mouse of late, and it’s much on my mind. Earlier this week, I sat down with my other half and some friends and watched an amazing video on YouTube – the Journey Into Imagination Ultimate Tribute. It was like having an old you thought you’d never see again...drop by your house for 40 minutes or so. Journey Into Imagination, in case you have no idea what … [Read more...]

See…and Hear…and Talk to Ya Real Soon – Disney’s Steps into Guest Interaction

Hullo, Gentle Readers. It’ll probably shock no one to hear that I vastly prefer face-to-face interaction to long-distance communication, despite the fact that I write a column on Le Interwebs. I will always prefer the intimacy of a tabletop game of D&D to any MMORPG, and I’d rather talk with someone face-to-face over a Skype chat, or even a phone call. When it comes to my love of Disney, I’ve been developing a fascination with the ways in which the company has been trying to make … [Read more...]

Disney Geek – Movie Edition

Lotso Posse

Hi, gentle readers. Right now, as I write these words, I'm sitting at the house of my friends, in the cold of November New England. By the time they appear on the site, however, and you're able to read them, I'll be winging down to Orlando Florida to take my first Disney cruise with my husband Steve and our equally Disney-Geeky housemate Jay. No, don't pity us. ;) As a result, the conversation this weekend has turned frequently to Disney (not surprising when you realize that our friends have … [Read more...]

Movies That Molded a Geek: Beauty and the Beast

Yes, I know a Disney movie with a princess might not appeal to all of the usual readers, but bear with me - if ever a Disney film shaped the geek I was and who I would become, this one is it.  And if we're going to talk about a Disney princess, why not talk about the nerdiest one, eh?     In terms of Disney films, I was born at the perfect time.  I was six years old when The Little Mermaid hit theaters, in elementary school for the Big Four of the Second Golden Age of Disney Animation: The … [Read more...]
