It’s the end, but the moment has been prepared for

By the time you read this, I will probably be glued to my TV screen, watching this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special - which, incidentally, will also be the last episode to feature Matt Smith.  As of next week, Geek's Dream Girl will have stopped producing new content, so I won't have written my thoughts on the new regeneration.  And honestly, I'm finding the timing kind of fitting. My first post for GDG went live on February 23, 2009.  To demonstrate just how long a time that's been, … [Read more...]

Favorite Finds: December Edition

As you've heard by now, Geek's Dream Girl will be closing up at the end of the month.  I'm sure I'm going to be pretty nostalgic next week, but for now, I'm just going to focus on the moment, mentioning some of the things I've been finding awesome and that I won't have time to talk about later. The Room Two You may have already played The Room, a delightfully spooky puzzle game from Fireproof Games available on iPad (among others).  The original game took me forever to complete, because I … [Read more...]

The Day of the Doctor: Looking Back, Moving On

After literally years of waiting, the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special has aired.  I feel a bit like the winter holidays have started early, actually.  Let's discuss a little of what went on and what we can expect for the future.  It might be obvious, but this will contain spoilers for those who haven't yet watched the episode. Truth and Lies We all knew the special would be a multi-doctor event in that it would contain both David Tennant and Matt Smith, but we weren't sure of anything … [Read more...]

Who Anniversary: Get Ready

The 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who is drawing ever closer, and I for one am getting more and more excited (trust me, it's possible).  Many of my friends are preparing by brushing up on past episodes - specifically, rewatching the most recent season.  I don't think that's a bad idea at all (after all, Moffat's plots do get rather timey-wimey) but recall that the 50th Anniversary celebrates the entire history of Who, not just the last few seasons!  Here are a few other options to get into the Who … [Read more...]

Who History: Regenerate

The history of regeneration in Doctor Who is convoluted - not surprising when you consider the facts that a) the show has 50 years worth of writers and b) it was a concept invented on the fly.  It happens to fit perfectly in a show about aliens and travel through time and space, but it was borne of necessity.  Regeneration was conceived when the First Doctor, William Hartnell, had to leave the show due to health issues.  Rather than introduce a new character, or substitute another actor and … [Read more...]

Who History: New Developments in Missing Episodes

After waiting so long for the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, time has seemingly sped up and it's almost crept up on me!  Even if you're staunchly avoiding spoilers and speculation, there's still plenty of Who-related news to be had: The anniversary will be simulcast in many countries, including on BBCAmerica in the US (I'm just assuming they're going to work out that East Coast/West Coast thing this one time).  Additionally, select theaters will be showing 3D versions of the Anniversary … [Read more...]

Doctor Who: The Name of the (Next) Doctor

Even if you didn't tune in on Sunday to watch the live special by the BBC, chances are you've already heard that actor who will be portraying the Twelfth Doctor has been named.  And the result is... A white male. Okay, that's not really the correct response (it's Peter Capaldi), but that's pretty much what you'll find if you looked at Twitter or Facebook around then.  A non-woman, a non-ginger, a non-anything-new-and-different.  And I'll admit it, there was a tiny part of me that was … [Read more...]

Pet Accessories: Geeking Out With Your Best Friend

I'll level with you: it's been a long time since I've owned a pet.  "My cat" actually lives with my mother, and has since I went off to college; after that I didn't have the heart to uproot her.  Still, I'd feel weird getting another animal while "my cat" is still out there. All this to say, when I last dealt in animal accessories, I felt extra special that my cat had a purple collar instead of a standard red or blue one.  Well, times, they have a-changed.  Just as it's now way easier to find … [Read more...]

Geek: The Next Generation

Just as there are different generations in mainstream culture, there are absolutely different generations in geek culture.  It can be pretty easy to peg the age of a fellow geek just based on their interests or references, just as you might with music or sports references.  Don't believe me?  Ask someone what their first game console was.  Most big Buffy fans will tend to be between the ages of 27 and 45, but most likely in their mid to upper 30s.  And I don't know about you, but I've always … [Read more...]

Doctor Who: Changing of the Guard

As you've likely heard by now, Matt Smith has announced his upcoming departure from Doctor Who.  He'll be on board for the 50th Anniversary Special, but he'll be regenerating soon after in the 2013 Christmas Special. The day the announcement was made, I had a surprisingly difficult time of it.  When I first started watching New Who in 2005 I was no stranger to the concept of regeneration or the various and sundry Doctors; thus, Christopher Eccleston's departure was bittersweet, but expected. … [Read more...]
