I had a fun conversation with one of my players last night. To him, D&D begins and ends with 4E; he never played an earlier version of it. One of the nicest things people have said about my various RPG campaigns is that they tend to feel like real places that the players get a glimpse into on a weekly (or so) basis. They look forward to visiting places that they like, they actually smile or scowl when certain NPCs pop up, and they’re always looking for news and rumors of distant places. I remember what I thought when 4th Edition D&D was announced. I was excited, because I’d been playing enough D&D 3 and 3.5 that I had begun to see things that I felt were flaws. I hoped that these things would be addressed in a new system. As articles appeared giving us a glimpse of 4E, I got even more excited. I was planning on writing an article about whether or not I thought 5th Edition D&D would be coming soon, and Wizards of the Coast announces they are beginning work on the next iteration of D&D. The holiday season is upon us: Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day…don’t you wish there was actually boxing on Boxing Day? No? Maybe it’s just me. A few weeks ago, buzz about the D&D episode of the sitcom Community spread like wildfire through the world of geekdom. And the buzz was good! Everyone raved about it, and when even Monte Cook chimed in that it was awesome, I knew I had to see it, even though I’d never seen a single episode of the show before.
