For the Ladiez: 5 Great Geeky Fanservice Moments for (Straight) Women

Shepard ogles a shirtless Jacob

Newsflash: Both men and women have libidos and enjoy ogling a little scantily clad flesh from time to time. But while geek culture has more than its fair share of fanservice and scanty clothing designed to appeal to straight men (and possibly lesbians), there isn’t quite as much pandering to a straight female (or gay male) audience. We don’t really have many gender flipped equivalents to, say, the skimpy Theiss costumes in original Star Trek or the entirety of the Dead or Alive game … [Read more...]

Doctor Who: Series Six Finale Review

amy

Another season of Doctor Who has come to a close.  If you haven't watched the final episode yet, best to put this on hold for now, because there are spoilers, even if they are vague.  You've been warned!   First of all, let me get this out of the way: I'm still enjoying Doctor Who.  It's still one of my favorite shows to watch, and even on its worst day I prefer the writing vastly to the first few new series.  I'm still a Moffat fangirl.  I still can't wait for next season (which, I've … [Read more...]

Geektastic Music: Nine Must-Listen Geek Songs

team-unicorn-geek-and-gamer-girls-2

I like an eclectic assortment of music. On a daily basis, my playlist can range from country to classical to classic rock. I’ve seen shock rock legend Alice Cooper live, caught the eye of Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen and got a thumbs (well, thumb) up from him, and was just three rows back from country dreamboat Kenny Chesney. But for as many different types of music as I like, there is one that really speaks to my heart: geektastic music. That’s right, geektastic music. Everything from … [Read more...]

Confession: I’m a Nerd

makeitorbreakit

Let's not kid ourselves here: even in the geek world, there are guilty pleasures, and then there are guilty pleasures.  Or, perhaps I could put it another way: there are geek pleasures, and then there are guilty pleasures. You see, I'm pretty comfortable in the geek world.  To me, being a fan of Mythbusters or Firefly or Lord of the Rings is, frankly, mainstream.  And I've noticed that some things that geeks will list as guilty pleasures - like singing along to Dr. Horrible or building a … [Read more...]

Five Gifts for the Sci-Fi Fan

These are five items that didn't fit into my previous lists, but are just too awesome to leave out. Those winter holidays are approaching with frightening speed; maybe you're going to give a belated present, so you want it to be really good, or maybe your geeks are frugal and like celebrating after the post-Christmas sales. Whether you're giving gifts on time or fashionably late, here's five more to consider. Tauntaun Sleeping Bag, $99.99, ThinkGeek - You might have seen images of this … [Read more...]

Chilling: Top 5 Creepiest Villains

I've stated before that I'm not a fan of horror - and I'm not.  I've never seen a Saw movie, The Ring freaked me out for ages, and I won't be seeing Paranormal Activity. That being said, I do enjoy being spooked.  It's great fun to get just creeped out enough, to get chills, but not so many that they block out the warmth of the real world. I find TV horror is pretty much the speed for me - even when it's on cable, I'm sitting in my living room, with the lights on, keeping any monsters at … [Read more...]

How I Learned to Relax and Love the Pop-Culture Explosion

Okay, I'm an adult; I can confess this without shame. I'm a major fan of Harry Potter, and I'm eagerly awaiting opening night for the sixth movie.  I've been to at least one midnight book release party, and I intend on getting a Hogwarts Express at some point for my Christmas tree. It wasn't always like this, however.  … [Read more...]

Geek Keywords: A Different Kind of Search

So let's say you live in a highly metropolitan area.  No matter what your custom search, you just wind up with tons upon tons of ladies.  Or, maybe you don't want to limit yourself with categories like body type or religion, and again, you've got pages upon pages of prospects.  How do you weed out the girls who would have nothing to do with geeks, but leave the ones that are geek girls themselves? You can do just-for-fun keyword searches, of course!  Some of these might not be your own … [Read more...]
