Tis the Season… for Krampus

The holiday season is in full swing, but this week some parts of the world are about to celebrate one you might not be as familiar with: The Feast of Saint Nicholas. Last year we covered that I'm a Christmas geek, but while I mentioned Krampus he's not really associated with Christmas... technically.  I know Krampus is becoming popular in recent years, but if you're a fan the time to celebrate is now, not Christmas Eve.  Since we know geeks are a stickler for accuracy, here's a little background … [Read more...]

NFL: Needs More Robots

So we're in the thick of the pro football season.  Maybe not normally a topic we associate with geekery, but geeks come in all flavors, and let me tell you, my Facebook feed is full of football updates (and to quote The IT Crowd, my friends list is pretty much limited to self-proclaimed "standard nerds").  Even I've gotten into it this year, which is honestly bizarre for me: I didn't attend a big football college, and despite having been in the marching band in high school and thus attending … [Read more...]

Jack-o-Lanterns: Gearing Up to Geek Out

We're already in the thick of fall, and I've had my Halloween decorations (small though they may be) out for days already.  Maybe this is part of the continuing "I'm getting so old!" theme, but I've noticed I've had to adjust my expectations for Halloween over the years.  I'm obviously not of trick-or-treating age anymore, and actually, as an adult, I've never actually been visited by trick-or-treaters (I'm told malls and parking lots are the places to do this now.  So weird).  Most of the … [Read more...]

The Things We Leave Behind: Why?

A long time ago (the 1990s), when I was a freshman in high school, I decided to carry a McDonald's Happy Meal plastic pumpkin pail as a purse/pencil box.  I have no idea what possessed me to do this, but I thought it was adorable and funny (baby irony, I suppose).  When it was no longer the Halloween season, I spotted a tin Sailor Moon lunchbox at a store I loved.  I carried some form of lunchbox for the remainder of high school. Even as I write this, I cringe.  I associate the lunchbox purse … [Read more...]

Video Game: The Ultra-Super-Special Edition

I recall a time, in the distant past, wherein it was a big deal to purchase a video game console and games.  Most of us mere mortals were content with that experience alone, but as with most technology, it quickly grew more diverse, more personal.  More expensive. For example, I didn't just have a Sega Game Gear - I had a cool carrying case for the device and the games, as well as the AC adaptor that tethered me to the wall whilst freeing me from mounds of spent batteries.  Soon, you could … [Read more...]

Pet Accessories: Geeking Out With Your Best Friend

I'll level with you: it's been a long time since I've owned a pet.  "My cat" actually lives with my mother, and has since I went off to college; after that I didn't have the heart to uproot her.  Still, I'd feel weird getting another animal while "my cat" is still out there. All this to say, when I last dealt in animal accessories, I felt extra special that my cat had a purple collar instead of a standard red or blue one.  Well, times, they have a-changed.  Just as it's now way easier to find … [Read more...]

Geek: The Next Generation

Just as there are different generations in mainstream culture, there are absolutely different generations in geek culture.  It can be pretty easy to peg the age of a fellow geek just based on their interests or references, just as you might with music or sports references.  Don't believe me?  Ask someone what their first game console was.  Most big Buffy fans will tend to be between the ages of 27 and 45, but most likely in their mid to upper 30s.  And I don't know about you, but I've always … [Read more...]

Favorite Finds: Never Mind the Buzzcocks

This week has been a rough one, and personally I can only focus on the lightest and fluffiest fare.  Luckily I've recently been devouring a TV show which provides exactly that - and if you, too, need a little goofy diversion, it's easily available.  I'd been vaguely aware of the UK show Never Mind the Buzzcocks for years - it's been running since 1996, so it crops up every now and then in articles, conversations and the like.  However, all I knew was that it was a British music quiz show … [Read more...]

Who History: Dr. Who or Doctor Who?

We've all seen them: the images floating around Tumblr and Pinterest.  The threads that pop up on forums and Facebook.  The little snide comments on Twitter.  They usually boil down to something like this:  Person A: Oh hai guys, I'm almost done with the first season of Dr Who! Boy that gas mask mummy kid was scary. Person B: OMG. Okay, first of all, its not really the first season, there were eight Doctors that came first. Second of all - it's DOCTOR, not DR.  NEVER abbreviate it. Sheesh, … [Read more...]

Conquering Cons: Survival Mode

I just got back from PAX East 2013, and boy are my arms tired - but that's only because every bit of me is tired.  This is the year I'll be turning 30, and somewhat fittingly, it's a year in which I've made a few realizations about what I can and can't do anymore.  I know I sounded like Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon this weekend, wandering around saying "I'm getting too old for this!" Now, does that mean I'm too old for cons in general?  Absolutely not, as evidenced by the hordes of people … [Read more...]
