Jack-o-Lanterns: Gearing Up to Geek Out

We're already in the thick of fall, and I've had my Halloween decorations (small though they may be) out for days already.  Maybe this is part of the continuing "I'm getting so old!" theme, but I've noticed I've had to adjust my expectations for Halloween over the years.  I'm obviously not of trick-or-treating age anymore, and actually, as an adult, I've never actually been visited by trick-or-treaters (I'm told malls and parking lots are the places to do this now.  So weird).  Most of the … [Read more...]

Home Is Where the Horror Is

Mr. H. P. Lovecraft once said, more or less, that the greatest fear is that of the unknown. I would like to add an addendum to this: the greatest horror comes when the unknown invades the familiar. Some time back, I developed an interest in discovering what weirdness might lurk in my own backyard. Bigfoot might not be too popular hereabouts, but what else was out there? This was back before the internet, and it was slow going, until I discovered a few books on the subject. Now, of course, … [Read more...]

A Year of Zombie Fear

When I was little, my nerves were unshakable.  I read and watched anything that was scary and age-appropriate (and quite a few things that weren't).  Goosebumps?  Had it covered.  Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark?  Sure thing.  I wrote short stories that were likely ripped off from inspired by the Poe and Bradbury I was reading and the episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark? I was watching.  The only time I can remember being scared by something I read was the topiary scene from The Shining.  I … [Read more...]

Dog Halloween Costume: Chell from Portal

Titania as Chell

Happy Halloween everybody! Here's my Cocker Spaniel, Titania, engaging in some Chell cosplay: The Inspiration: Best Job Ever One of the perks of working at ThinkGeek is knowing what new products are coming before the rest of the world does. I had a heads-up on the Mini Portal Gun long before it launched, and I knew I had to dress Titania like Chell for Halloween. Of course, she can't actually use the Portal Gun, but it's the perfect size, isn't it? The Process: Oh Yeah, I'm New … [Read more...]

TV Terror: Halloween Episodes

Happy Halloween, all!  Growing up, Halloween was a major holiday for me.  I always had a little party in high school, and in college I went all-out, running one of the haunted houses in our campus-wide Halloween festival.  I've gone soft in my dotage - I no longer think it's appropriate to make small children cry - but I can't help but smile when I see others geeking out unabashedly on Halloween. And that includes on TV!  I love me a good Halloween-themed episode, especially when it involves … [Read more...]

Last Minute Superheroes

Hallowe’en is tonight and even though I am now ostensibly an adult and shouldn’t be squealing in glee like a five-year-old, I totally am. In fact, as you are reading this, I am probably dressed as a pirate. I love Hallowe’en. Always have. And not just for actual Hallowe’en night, which was always over too fast and involved too many pictures being taken of me, but for the weeks of planning and preparation ahead of me. More often than not I had started to make my costume the day after the … [Read more...]

Movies That Molded a Geek: The Worst Witch

So, there's this movie, starring Fairuza Balk as a witch who sticks it to the popular girl, gets in over her head and... saves the day?  No, I'm not talking about The Craft; I'm talking about The Worst Witch, a movie that was my four-year-old self's equivalent to Harry Potter, a cult classic and, um, kind of terrible, in an awesome way.   Mildred Hubble is a young witch sent to live and study at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches.  She attends the classes we'd all expect; Potions, Broom-Flying … [Read more...]

False Film Frights

In last week's episode of Doctor Who, the Doctor, his companions, and various tenants in an apartment complex find themselves in a creepy dollhouse.  I figured out where they were fairly early on; as a child I was particularly traumatized by an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? where a girl similarly finds herself in a dollhouse, turning into a doll.  I imagine there's now a new generation of children who will give Victorian dollhouses the side-eye.   Or will they?  I loved dollhouses … [Read more...]

Eat Your Heart Out, Great Pumpkin: GGG’s Guide to Great Halloween Fun

There’s something in the air in New England in October. The foliage usually intensifies to its peak, then leaves end up everywhere, causing footsteps to become crunchy and spooky. Maybe the moon is a little brighter, or the air’s a little cleaner, because everything seems just a little more in focus at night. The cider gets a little better, and my husband and I start grinning a little wider. Halloween is suddenly right around the corner. Halloween is kind of a big deal around our place. It’s … [Read more...]
