Man of Iron, Man of Steel

Two much anticipated superhero movies debut in 2013. As of this writing, one is here, and another will be here in a few weeks. Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel both feature iconic properties of their respective comic book companies. Each features a character with some level of proven box office draw. Each wants to be the summer blockbuster. But who’s going to end up on top? I thought I would offer my own feelings on the subject. I will preface this by saying that I haven’t seen either one yet. … [Read more...]

Thor and Wolverine: Peas in a Pod?

It feels like just yesterday that I was writing about the upcoming Wolverine and Thor movies, but apparently it was years ago!  And here I am once again: this week, the Internet has been alive with dueling trailers.  That's not even counting Iron Man 3, which has actually somewhat snuck up on me; I tend to follow movies more in preproduction/filming stage and forget once they're in post, and I ditched cable years ago so I'm not inundated with commercials. It's a pleasant surprise. I'd have to … [Read more...]

The Avengers: Lessons to be Learned

Despite my best efforts I know I'm a few weeks behind everyone else, but I finally got to see The Avengers.  Now, if you've read any of my other posts you may know that I constantly struggle with my dark, hipster side; I like discovering things before they're cool, and if large amounts of people go on about how so-and-so is fabulous, I tend to be skeptical.  Yes, I know this is a flaw.  Yes, I know that's kind of incongruous from a self-proclaimed geek - but maybe it won't surprise you to learn … [Read more...]

Avengers Assemble: The World’s New Obsession

The Avengers

So I went to see The Avengers again tonight, with my family. This being the third weekend it's out, and that we showed up more than an hour before the show, we weren't that worried about getting tickets. We should have been. It was sold out, and the next showing, and the three nearest theatres. Needless to say, I am now extremely depressed. So why is it still number one? Why is the internet obsessed with it? Mainly because it's awesome. So. In all seriousness, The Avengers was … [Read more...]

Being A Bookworm: A Little Less Lonely

Today, for about the fifth time, I was told I need to read The Hunger Games.  I'm told it's a YA (young adult) series set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic North America where there's a Running Man-esque TV show.  I don't know much more than that, and that these characters have some bizarre names that will probably be making their way into the 2015 - 2020 lists of top baby names.  Oh, and that there was some controversy about a movie tie-in nail polish.  Sometimes I feel like I get my information … [Read more...]

Things All Geeks Should Be Thankful For

It’s Thanksgiving Day here in the U.S., and as is the purpose of the holiday, I like to take a little time each year to reflect on what I’m thankful for. Before anyone rolls their eyes and says, “Must be nice…I don’t have anything to be thankful for,” just stop. No matter how bad things seem, everyone has something to be thankful for. I could be spending today bemoaning my husband’s illness that completely ruined several months of his life and cost him his day job, the fact that I’m stuck … [Read more...]
