Mecha Anime, the Movie: Review of Pacific Rim

Huh. So apparently, Hollywood is making anime now. Oh, don't be fooled. Pacific Rim might look like it's a live action Hollywood movie, with its Guillermo del Toros and Idris Elbas and Ron Perlmans. But at its heart, it is 100% grade A mecha anime. Add to that a heaping helping of classic kaiju movies and silly summer blockbusters, and it's a perfect storm of geeky interests. Yet for some reason, Pacific Rim has not been doing as well as people expected, despite a huge amount of positive … [Read more...]

Summer Not-So-Doldrums

As each year passes as a "cordcutter," I find myself watching fewer and fewer TV shows.  It's not intentional, but some shows - like Game of Thrones and Mad Men - just seem too heavy to start up again, so I keep putting them off.  Others, like the US version of The Office, have simply reached their end.  I definitely don't give as many new shows a shot as I used to, and for the past few years the shows I have - Alcatraz, The Secret Circle, Vegas - have all been cancelled, so I'm beginning to … [Read more...]

Man of Iron, Man of Steel

Two much anticipated superhero movies debut in 2013. As of this writing, one is here, and another will be here in a few weeks. Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel both feature iconic properties of their respective comic book companies. Each features a character with some level of proven box office draw. Each wants to be the summer blockbuster. But who’s going to end up on top? I thought I would offer my own feelings on the subject. I will preface this by saying that I haven’t seen either one yet. … [Read more...]

Spoilers, Sweetie: How to Survive Them

I think I can actually recall the first time I encountered a spoiler.  I must have been in elementary school, watching an episode of The Simpsons (I don't think I was actually allowed to watch the show early on, but somehow I managed anyway. It's a common tale in my generation).  Completely randomly, completely casually, Mayor Quimby revealed a major surprise from the movie The Crying Game.  Now, I was too young to have seen it, but I'm pretty sure it was still a relatively recent movie at the … [Read more...]

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Pleasure – GGG Reviews the First Hobbit Movie

I probably don’t need to tell you, Gentle Readers, how much Tolkien’s classic novel The Hobbit means to me. In many ways, seeing the Rankin-Bass animated movie when I was eight was a life-changing experience for me. It led to me reading the novels, which led to me playing D&D, which led to…well….many, many other good things in my life, including writing these articles. I probably don’t need to tell you how much I’ve been looking forward to Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-Earth with a … [Read more...]

The Christmas Geek

Ah, it's that time of year again.  It's the middle of December and I'm well into the thick of my personal holiday season, which typically starts after Thanksgiving but has been known to start much earlier in November. In years past I've written about how geeks put their own personal stamp on Christmas - think Star Wars-themed trees and the like.  But this year - in fact, just today - I realized something with a start.  I don't put my own geek spin on Christmas.  Christmas is something I geek … [Read more...]

Sugar Rush and Symbology: Review of Wreck-It Ralph

Here’s a quick test for you: 1)      Do you like video games? 2)      Have you seen Wreck It Ralph yet? If your answer to the first question is yes but second is no, then RUN, don’t walk, to your nearest theatre and watch Wreck It Ralph. Not only is it a genuinely excellent film with a surprising amount of heart and emotion, but it is a love-letter to your childhood, a joyful celebration of all things video games, and a welcome nudge and wink to those who understand the secret … [Read more...]

How to tell and be told that a fandom is problematic

sucker punch

Late breaking news: TV shows, movies, manga, anime, video games and other geeky media are problematic. They feature sequences, scenes, characters or entire storylines which can be sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, sizeist, classist, and any other unpleasant –ist you care to name. Some people never notice, while others notice but don’t care. And some decide to do something about it… they confront it head on. Chances are that, in the course of your geek career, you have either … [Read more...]

So What Do I Know? – GGG Ponders the Officially Announced Third Hobbit Movie

Okay, so, I was wrong. Was that awesome timing or what? The week after I post an article saying "I don't actually believe there'll be a third movie coming," Peter Jackson announces that they're splitting The Hobbit into 3 movies. I felt...yeah...pretty silly, really. Oh, well. At least my article turned out to be timely! As one person put it, however, this announcement answers one question and opens up about a zillion more. Will the titles of the movies remain the same? Is the third … [Read more...]

Avengers Assemble: The World’s New Obsession

The Avengers

So I went to see The Avengers again tonight, with my family. This being the third weekend it's out, and that we showed up more than an hour before the show, we weren't that worried about getting tickets. We should have been. It was sold out, and the next showing, and the three nearest theatres. Needless to say, I am now extremely depressed. So why is it still number one? Why is the internet obsessed with it? Mainly because it's awesome. So. In all seriousness, The Avengers was … [Read more...]
