Just Like Starting Over – GGG Pondering on the Retelling of Superhero Origins

Superman

I saw the new movie Chronicle this weekend with my husband and a couple of friends. I liked it quite a bit. On the way home, we discussed what we liked and disliked about it. All of us agreed that it was, essentially the origin story for a Superhero/Supervillain pairing. That got me thinking about Superhero origin stories, the most commonly told and retold stories in any comic book’s continuity. Why is it (I pondered) that origin stories are so lovingly told, over and over again? Can they be … [Read more...]

Origins 2011: The Bad Side of the Con #origins2011

Origins Speed Dating Room

In yesterday's post, I went over all the great things that happened at Origins. I'm very glad I wrote that post, because I don't want anyone to get the idea that nothing good happens at Origins. It's a convention in a wonderful city and the people who attend it are generally friendly, fun, and geeky. In fact, it hurts me to have to write this post.  But it's a story that needs to be told. All of my events at Origins 2011 had ZERO attendees. Compare this to GenCon, where my events were … [Read more...]

Origins 2011: The Good Side of the Con #origins2011

Apocalypse World Character - Savvyhead Adele

I spent this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio at Origins Game Fair. This is my third year attending Origins and may possibly be my last. (That sounded pretty ominous, didn't it?) But for this post, let's look at all the great things that happened at Origins 2011.  Always look on the bright side of life, right? Apocalypse World After a very tasty belated birthday dinner (in which we heard a hilarious story involving Tom Cadorette (@cadorette) and some hot peppers), Dave and I headed to Games … [Read more...]

Dice & Deadlines: Public Relations

Part of your job as a freelancer for the RPG industry is to have a public face. This is all part of the networking you do to keep track of the pulse of the RPG world. Public relations, in the context of this article, is all about how you deal with the public who consume your work and the industry who hires you to produce that work. For this article, I am going to focus primarily on the face to face aspect of public relations management. Next month's article will focus on the internet aspect … [Read more...]

Great Dates in 50 States: Columbus, Ohio

BP Headshot

It's time for another guest post in our Great Dates in 50 States series. Please welcome to the stage Matt Wagner and his ideas for dates in the hometown of Origins Game Fair: Columbus, Ohio. When people think of Ohio, it’s generally with a dismissal of “Flyover Country,” or perhaps thoughts of the Drew Carey show. If they get past that to think of Columbus, the next image that usually comes to mind is a horde of scarlet and grey clad OSU football fans, and that’s usually where people run … [Read more...]

Dice & Deadlines: Convention Networking

I've talked a lot about how the freelancer works within the RPG industry. Contracts, word counts, professionalism, editors and co-authors. But there is more to being a freelancer than just writing. Much more. It's called networking.  And that's what I'm going to focus on for the next few articles. Now, don't let the term "networking" give you hives. Really, all it means is going out, talking to people and making contacts within the industry. This particular article is going to focus … [Read more...]

E’s Origins Game Fair 2010 Wrap-Up

origins

There are some that call Origins the "Pepsi" of conventions; that is, if you have to choose between it and GenCon, there's an obvious winner. I would have to disagree. For me, comparing Origins to GenCon is like comparing cola to root beer: they may be similar in some aspects, but they're very different and enjoyable in others. Dungeons & Dragons I was disappointed to see that the Ultimate Dungeon Delve, which I had ADORED in 2009, had not returned to Origins this year. It was such a great … [Read more...]
