This has been a great year for geeky movies, and it should be right through to the end. We’ve gotten two amazing superhero films that could not be less alike – The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. We’ve gotten a medieval fantasy Pixar movie. We’re getting a Disney movie about classic arcade games. We’re getting a film adaptation of William Joyce’s Guardians of Childhood stories. Did you know that animation legend Gene Deitch was involved in a semi-animated version of “The Hobbit” in the 1960s? Seriously! Go Google "Hobbit" and "Gene Deitch" and you'll see. In it, Dale, the City of Golden Bells, is destroyed by the dragon Slag. Although I love RPGs, and I love Tolkien’s fictional setting, I have never been a fan of RPGs set in Middle-Earth. I’ve tried, honestly! ICE’s Middle-Earth Role-Playing (MERP) was just a watered down version of Rolemaster, a game I really didn’t care for. As the year wanders towards its conclusion, a certain amount of reflection is pretty much inevitable. Along with birthdays and anniversaries, the end of a year is a natural “save point,” if you will. It’s Thanksgiving Day here in the U.S., and as is the purpose of the holiday, I like to take a little time each year to reflect on what I’m thankful for.
