Thor and Wolverine: Peas in a Pod?

thewolverine

It feels like just yesterday that I was writing about the upcoming Wolverine and Thor movies, but apparently it was years ago!  And here I am once again: this week, the Internet has been alive with dueling trailers.  That's not even counting Iron Man 3, which has actually somewhat snuck up on me; I tend to follow movies more in preproduction/filming stage and forget once they're in post, and I ditched cable years ago so I'm not inundated with commercials. It's a pleasant surprise. I'd have … [Read more...]

For the Ladiez: 5 Great Geeky Fanservice Moments for (Straight) Women

Shepard ogles a shirtless Jacob

Newsflash: Both men and women have libidos and enjoy ogling a little scantily clad flesh from time to time. But while geek culture has more than its fair share of fanservice and scanty clothing designed to appeal to straight men (and possibly lesbians), there isn’t quite as much pandering to a straight female (or gay male) audience. We don’t really have many gender flipped equivalents to, say, the skimpy Theiss costumes in original Star Trek or the entirety of the Dead or Alive game … [Read more...]

The Avengers: Lessons to be Learned

avengers

Despite my best efforts I know I'm a few weeks behind everyone else, but I finally got to see The Avengers.  Now, if you've read any of my other posts you may know that I constantly struggle with my dark, hipster side; I like discovering things before they're cool, and if large amounts of people go on about how so-and-so is fabulous, I tend to be skeptical.  Yes, I know this is a flaw.  Yes, I know that's kind of incongruous from a self-proclaimed geek - but maybe it won't surprise you to … [Read more...]

Avengers Assemble: The World’s New Obsession

The Avengers

So I went to see The Avengers again tonight, with my family. This being the third weekend it's out, and that we showed up more than an hour before the show, we weren't that worried about getting tickets. We should have been. It was sold out, and the next showing, and the three nearest theatres. Needless to say, I am now extremely depressed. So why is it still number one? Why is the internet obsessed with it? Mainly because it's awesome. So. In all seriousness, The Avengers was … [Read more...]

Versus: The Glory of Super-powered Team-Ups and Crossovers

ArchiePunisher

FIRST THINGS FIRST. I haven’t seen The Avengers yet. I know. I have failed all of you, and I will attempt to atone for it by saying two Iron Mans and a Hail Thor. In the meantime, before ANYONE SPOILS ME FOR AVENGERS (and I swear the first person to squeak ‘Snape kills Dumbledore!’ gets Mjolnir upside the head), let’s talk about superhero team-ups and crossovers. The Avengers, since their inception, has always been a melange of existing heroes and the occasional new recruit – … [Read more...]

Thor’s Day, Thor’s Day, Gotta Get Down on Thor’s Day

thor

I gotta give these new Avengers movies something – they’re hella entertaining. I can be very forgiving of movies if they just show me a good time. And Thor was a very good time. The plot was a little spare, even for a superhero flick. Most of the movie felt like a prologue to the actual movie, but then again they had to squish quite the epic origin saga into it and still turn out a decent flick. As it was they still cut out a decade or so of Dr Donald Blake. But if Thor only gets one more … [Read more...]
