WoW Raid Finder: Looking For Fun

Can't Find a PUG?

Recently a new patch came out for World of Warcraft. Normally, this wouldn’t be a big deal - a new raid, some new tweaks - except this one actually has a potentially game-changing addition: the new Raid Finder. With the Raid Finder, you can quickly join a 25-man “easy mode” version of the new raid, which, incidentally, is the end-game content. Suddenly, even the most casual of players can easily experience downing Deathwing. Allow me to back up: I’ve been playing World of Warcraft … [Read more...]

Cataclysm Raiding: Getting Ready to Rumble

fourwinds

We're now a month in on Cataclysm.  We're past first impressions.  We've tried the new races, we've got at least one archaeologist, and we might have already played through most of the new content.  So what's the emotional climate of World of Warcraft nowadays?  Well, for myself, there's been more than a little frustration. After a holiday break in which I didn't touch WoW at all, I put my little Worgen on hold so that I could get my main geared up for raiding.  I was already 85, but I … [Read more...]

Waiting for Cataclysm: The Final Push

Well, we're in the middle of September, and everything appears to be happening right on schedule in the World of Warcraft.  Rumors are flying about a November 2 release date; a few small world events have begun (my only 80's are Alliance, but Gnomeregan is a blast); and some of the new changes are now playable via the test realms.  Whether the launch date is really as soon as Nov. 2 or not, Cataclysm is not far away.  We're no longer in the stage where we're killing time before the … [Read more...]

Dreamgirl Introductions: Meet Z

z

Okay, I'll admit it. The reason I didn't write this bio a few days ago like I'd planned was because I was procrastinating by playing Runescape. (Don't hate me. I know, I know, WoW graphics and gameplay are better. But I'm almost at one million gold for the first time and I don't want to abandon my character after so long!) ...so, this is pretty typical moment for me, actually. Hi! I'm z, the last letter of the dreamgirl alphabet. Because I'm terrible at rambling about myself (it always … [Read more...]

Dreamgirl Introductions: Meet M

Who am I, you ask? ... okay, maybe you're not asking, but I'm going to tell you anyway. My name is M, aka Michelle Clough, and I am the new resident anime/manga girl for Geek's Dream Girl. How I stumbled into this hallowed and worthy position is a tale of great import and substance, involving dramatic acts of applying and sample writing, but suffice to say that I'm very, VERY happy to be here. I've been a geek for as long as I can remember. While my classmates were running around on … [Read more...]

Dear Anon-O-Box: She’s Geek-Curious, How Do I Break Her In Gently?

Dear Anon-O-Box, What do you do if you find a geek-ready girl? One who is not quite yet an uber-geek, but one who's interested and amenable to things geeky. How can I bring her into the fold without blowing her mind and scaring her away from geeky stuff? - Gateway Geek e answers: Dear GG, You're looking for some gateway geek activities! I polled our Twitter followers to see what they thought were some good gateway geek activities to help bring the geek curious closer and closer to … [Read more...]

Tips for a Great Geek Gathering

realgenius

Last weekend I went to a World of Warcraft party.  I kept wanting to call it a LAN party, but that's not really accurate; still, it was a bunch of people and their computers, in a house, having a good time.  Really, it was a fantastic party, and I realized that many of the features that made it great can be applied to any setting.  So, if you're planning a video-game marathon, a geek gathering or just a regular old party, here's a few tips to set it apart: Eat Like Grown-Ups At the … [Read more...]

Epic Mickey Brings Epic Anticipation

I may or may not have mentioned that one of my favorite video game series, ever, is Kingdom Hearts.  I couldn't wait to play the first game, partly because Final Fantasy was the first RPG series I had ever played, but equally important was the Disney component. See, I grew up in Orlando.  I've been going to Disney World since I was three years old.  It was a rite of passage for many teens to work there, and most rewards or field trips involved trips to Disney.  Most people in Orlando have … [Read more...]

My Inner Indie Snob and Felicia Day

TheGuild

About six months ago I admitted a character flaw: that I tend to resist pop-culture phenomenons.  At the end of the post I mention that I take more suggestions nowadays. Well, I realized last week that I've done it again - I've settled right back into my knee-jerk, resist-what-people-are-fawning-over ways.  And no, I'm not talking about Avatar. I'm talking about Felicia Day. It's not her fault, really.  I didn't even really know who she was.  My snobbery started with Dr. Horrible's … [Read more...]

Where’s the RP in RPG?

The other day, I was talking to my brother, and he said something about playing role-playing games. "But I don't play role-playing games," I said, surprised. "You're playing a role-playing game right now," he said.  We were playing World of Warcraft.  "My character is a beer-swilling dwarf." I let him win the argument at the time, but since then, it's really got me wondering: Should I count something like World of Warcraft, or other similar video games, as role-playing?  … [Read more...]
