PAX Prime Panel: Fantasia: Music Evolved

I've attended PAX East for the past few years, but this year I had the opportunity to attend the mother-con, PAX Prime.  Though there are dozens of panels to choose from, there was one caught my attention immediately: a panel about a collaboration between Harmonix and Disney's Fantasia.  Though I obviously knew about the other big Disney game of the year, I hadn't heard about this at all (I suppose my attention was diverted during E3).  But as a woman who loves Disney, loves Harmonix, loves … [Read more...]

The Console Wars: Attitude is Everything

The console wars.  It's a phrase that gets tossed around, but rarely has it actually applied like it has for the last week.  Of course we're all viewing this from our own lens - with our own loyalties, history, personal circumstances, etc - and that shapes our opinion, but most would agree on two points: a)XBox/Microsoft can't seem to keep their collective foot out of their mouth, and b)Playstation/Sony has been taking advantage of this with sometimes hilarious results. Honestly, if you'd … [Read more...]

Geek Guilt and the Wii U

Way back in 2006, the Wii came out.  And I got one that very same week.  I don't remember if I wound up standing in line for that one - actually I think I might have gotten it through some sort of online deal, though it's all a bit fuzzy.  I remember how I felt, though: I was so excited , so sure that the Wiimote was the way of the future, so much more intuitive than punching buttons.   Cut to today.  The Wii U was released a few weeks ago... and I didn't even know about it until launch day. … [Read more...]

Final Fantasy XIII-2: Sequel Worth Exploring?

Prologue Long ago, I was something of a fan of the Final Fantasy franchise.  Not the earliest games, mind you, but from VII on.  When it came time to buy a next generation console, one of the main pros for the PS3 side - aside from the Blu-Ray player, when no one knew how that little battle was going to turn out - was the promise of Final Fantasy XIII, which, it was expected, would only come out for Playstation. Still, other factors outweighed the Final Fantasy issue, so when I bought my 360, I … [Read more...]

Wii U: Deja Vu?

Journey with me now... back... through the mists of time... The year is 2006.  After the successful purchase of a DS Lite, I'm well on my way to becoming a Nintendo fangirl - something of a surprise, since prior to the DS the last Nintendo product I'd owned was the original console.  The Wii seems like the console of The Future: more family/party oriented (not just for hardcore gamers), more innovative, more intuitive.  Cheaper. Backwards compatibility, Virtual Console.  I got one shortly … [Read more...]

LEGO Pirates: Tell a Tale of Fun

Until a week or so ago, I had never played a LEGO video game.   If you know me, that ought to be shocking.  For one thing, I'm one of those people who melt and giggle at anything cute.  For another, I have a pretty silly sense of humor.  I'm willing to at least try most video games.  Then there's the fact that I'm a fangirl, at varying levels, of the Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Pirates of the Caribbean movies.  And finally, my personal favorite: at least five years ago, I … [Read more...]

Portal 2: Superior Core

Okay, I'll be the first to admit it: while I thought the first Portal game had ingenious gameplay, funny voice acting, and a strangely addictive end credits song, I didn't get the hype. Unlike other phenomena that took me a while to warm up, it was not that I'd heard that this game was ah-maze-ing before I'd ever played it.  I think I might've played it shortly after it was released.  No one was talking about it, then.  And it was cute, and funny.  It was funnier later to see that Rock Band … [Read more...]

Guinness’ Top 50 Video Game Characters Of All Time

Everyone's heard of the Guinness Book of World Records.  It is the definitive voice, the tome of the best and the longest and the smallest.  If you want notoriety for the tallest stack of mattresses or the Dancing Cats of Applesap, you want to be in this book, because it means you're the whateverist, ever, in the world, in all of history. What I didn't know, however, is that there's so many records out there pertaining to gaming that they actually make a Gamer's Edition of the book.  This is … [Read more...]

Rock Band 3: Now With Totally Rad Keytar

I've mentioned this before, but Harmonix and I go way back.  If it's a game that involves rhythm, music and orbs flying towards me, chances are I'll like it.  Thus, it's probably not a surprise that yesterday the FedEx truck pulled up with a long, thin box containing Rock Band 3 and the new keyboard controller. My Rock Band setup is kind of a motley assortment.  I'll be honest - I never got used to the Rock Band guitar controller, so I still use two wireless Guitar Hero 3 controllers.  The … [Read more...]

Dreamgirl Introductions: Meet M

Who am I, you ask? ... okay, maybe you're not asking, but I'm going to tell you anyway. My name is M, aka Michelle Clough, and I am the new resident anime/manga girl for Geek's Dream Girl. How I stumbled into this hallowed and worthy position is a tale of great import and substance, involving dramatic acts of applying and sample writing, but suffice to say that I'm very, VERY happy to be here. I've been a geek for as long as I can remember. While my classmates were running around on … [Read more...]
